RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 12, 1941

by Chanse Hall, Mount Ayr Record-News

"Corn Parade," a mural by Orr Fisher, Mount Ayr artist, was hung in the Mount Ayr post office yesterday. The mural, which Mr. Fisher was commissioned to do unter the Federal Works Agency, decorates the entire upper half of the east wall.

A total of 3.08 inches of rain fall on Sunday and Monday overflowed rivers and creeks and resulted in the loss of one life in the county.

The tragic death of Mrs. Charles Bailey, of Diagonal, occurred Monday afternoon when the wagon in which she was riding overturned in the currents of the backwater of [the] Platte River four miles west of Diagonal. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Clayton and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stitesman and Mrs. Bailey had gone to the river to watch the rising water. When Mr. Clayton stated to drive the team across the waters, [the team] became frightened at a piece of driftwood and started to run. One of the horses slipped and fell pulling the other horse down and throwing the seven occupants into the water.

The horses and running gears of the wagon aught on the fence and the horses drowned there. The wagon box and body of Mrs. Bailey floated several feet down the river and lodged on some bushes. Searching parties didn't find Mrs. Bailey's body until about 11:30 that night.

Transcriber's Note: Emma Dora (Clayton) Bailey was born in 1881. She was interred at Clearfield Cemetery.

Louise Ferree began training Monday as operator at the local telephone office. Betty Daughton left recently for Cedar Rapids where she has accepted a position as assistant advertising manager in Armstrong's Department Store.

BEACONSFIELD - Newly elected officers of the 1922 club are Mrs. Alice Boyd, president; Mrs. Naomi Bryant, vice-president; Mrs. Oris Ruby, secretary; and, Mrs. Mary McConnell, treasurer.

REDDING - Thelma Bacon, of Bethany, MO., has been elected to teach home economics and English in the Redding schools for the coming year.

BIRTHS:

  • Born, June 10, to Mr. and Mrs. E. (Sandy) Stringham, a son, Donald Lee. Weight, five pounds.

Transcription by Sharon R. Becker, October of 2016
