Ringgold county youth active in the 4-H program were honored for achievements in many areas when the annual 4-H awards program was held Sunday evening at the Mount Ayr Community high school auditorium.

Krista SHAHA, Mount Ayr community high school junior and daughter of Kyle and Pam SHAHA of Mount Ayr, was second out of six entries in a junior division at the state "Make It Yourself With Wool" contest. The event was held December 5 at Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines.

Betty Anne FRY (Mrs. Sam) of Mount Ayr began employment Monday, Nov. 30, as a secretary at the Grand Valley of Kellerton Community schools. She will substitute for Barb BINNING who is taking three months' maternity leave.

Members of the Mount Ayr Resource Commission (MARC) officially welcomed Bob Roe Insurance and Real Estate to the community last week with a ribbon cutting at the grand opening of the firm, located on the west side of the square.

Robert TOLAND, a former Mount Ayr resident, has been promoted to manage the company's northeast district operations in Washington for Iowa Southern Utilities. He started his career with ISU in September 1949 in Mount Ayr as a laborer. He had been supervisor in Osceola since January 1968.

A third place finish by 132-pounder Cody SHAY was Mount Ayr's top entry in the Greenfield Invitational Tournament Saturday, Dec. 5. Dusty BARBER also collected third place points in the three-man super heavyweight bracket. The Raider matmen finished eighth in team standings at the nine-team tournament which saw Clarke and Johnston take the top two placings.

There are 62 youth participating in the Mount Ayr Junior Bowling program for the 1987-88 season. This is a new all-time high for number of youth involved in junior bowling. The program is again sponsored by the Mount Ayr Lions Club.

Two young women with local connections were on the USA Today newspaper's "super 25" list of basketball players from across the United States. They were the only two from Iowa. Tricia WAUGH, granddaughter of Clarence and Mary WAUGH of Redding and daughter of Jerry and Julie WAUGH of Jefferson, was considered last season's top six-on-six player from this area with her junior year average of 43.7 points per game. Molly TIDEBACK, niece of Marjorie "Tidey" BAKER of Redding, who is a senior at Waterloo Columbus, was considered a top five-on-five player with a 26.1 average of points per game for her junior year.
