RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 09, 1999

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

A festival of fun and the arts to celebrate Scottish heritage and recognize VietNam War veterans on the 25th anniversary of the end of the war -- that's the Ayr Days celebration planned Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Mount Ayr.

There will be "royalty" for the celebration this year as the Ayr Days queen is crowned. Contestants include Dara CREVELING, Chandra DRAKE, Natalie GOLLIDAY, Kiley GORMAN, Kelsey GREENMAN, Sarah HERMANSTORFER, Amy LAWLESS, Laurie McGHEE, and Melonie MOBLEY.

There will be only one race on the ballot when Ringgold county residents go to the polls for school elections in the three area school elections Tuesday. One race in the Mount Ayr Community schol district has two candidates - that for director district #1. In that district voters will be choosing between incumbent Beth WHITSON of Beaconsfield and Brad STILL of Kellerton. In director district #3 incumbent Mike McGEHEE is running unopposed.

There's a new chicken product in the grocer's cooler and farmers from Ringgold and Taylor counties have helped foster its development. The fresh chicken is called "Smart Chicken" and is currently the only brand of the poultry that is air-chilled in the United States. Local growers Wendell and Keven JACKSON, Richard and Neil WEEHLER, Mike and Joe WARIN and Dr. Kenneth JENNETT and their families of western Ringgold county and Taylor county combined account for eight chicken barns which each produce up to 50,000 broilers per barn every six weeks.

An open house is planned for the new Ringgold county engineer's office at 707 S. Henderson Street, south of the county yard in Mount Ayr. [The county engineer's office moved from its previous location in the Ringgold County Court House.]

Members of the Mount Ayr Community high school livestock judging team brought home a silver medal from the state contest held at Iowa State University in Ames recently. The livestock judging team of Richard FARIS, Chad DRAKE, Reggie LESAN and Josh SCHAAF took part with 40 other teams.
