RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, Thursday, July 09, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Cooperating weather swelled the crowd as people from far and near celebrated the centennial of Benton Sunday. A crowd estimated at more than 2,500 people shared the day in the community of 52, taking part in a number of activities during the busy day. Named queen for the celebration from a group of 11 candidates was Kelly GRAHAM. Reigning as princess and prince for the day were Jessica GRAHAM and Larry LANE.

A crew from the Ringgold county engineer's office spent Tuesday morning, July 7, putting "road closed" signs in the east half of the county after a record 5.7 inches of rain fell at the Shelby-Grundy Iowa State University Experimental Farm, operated by Kenneth DRIFTMIER, one mile north of Beaconsfield.

When the Ayr Days planning committee held a recent meeting to discuss plans for the annual Scottish-themed celebration September 1-12, there was a touch of authenticity present. Irene and Neil MacDONALD from Hamilton, Scotland came with relatives Bill and Nancy IDE of Creston to visit the meeting. They talked about their customs, promised material to help with the celebration and even played few tunes on a pipe. Neil didn't have his bagpipes with him.

Democratic presidential candidate Bruce BABBITT, former governor of Arizona, will be in Mount Ayr Saturday, July 11, to meet with local Democrats at the Shamrock Cafe.

Amy RINEHART, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hollis RINEHART, was installed as worthy advisor of the Mount Ayr Rainbow Assembly, Sunday, May 31, at the Masonic Temple in Mount Ayr.

Quick response by neighbors to a potentially dangerous fire apparently kept damage confined to a fishing boat at the home of David and Marie STILL and their two daughters, who live at 100 South Grant Street in Mount Ayr. Neighbors Steve and Sharon SMITH and their guests, Randy and Ruth McDONNELL, looked across back yards two houses away to see flames coming from under the STILL deck about 10:25 p.m. Saturday, July 5. When the blaze was discovered, McDONNELL went to investigate and he and SMITH were able to pull the boat from under the deck, Mrs. SMITH said.

The grand opening of Doc's Place liquor store was held Saturday and Mount Ayr Resource Commission representatives were on hand for the opening. Owners are Jim HYMBAUGH and Doug HYMBAUGH. The new liquor store takes the place of the state-owner liquor store which closed July 1. It is located in the former Decor Shoppe building at 200 N. Taylor Street north of the square in Mount Ayr.

The Free Methodist Church in Mount Ayr has a new pastor. Rev. Craig A. ARMS, wife Laura and children Joanne and Jason have come to Mount Ayr from Zion, IL.
