An ink contour drawing of a saxophone by Diagonal Community high school student, Deb ROEMER won a gold key in the 1989 Western Iowa Regional Scholastic Art Award (Gold Key) exhibition for high school students. ROEMER is the daughter of John and Patricia WHITE and was one of three Diagonal art students to receive awards in the competition. Mindy CARSON, daughter of Frank and Sue CARSON, and Jessica TULL, daughter of Dale and Marlene TULL, received honorable mentions for their drawings as well.

A Ringgold county farmer was among winners in the conservation tillage division of the 1988 Iowa Master Soybean Growers' contest. Craig D. ELLIOTT of ELLIOTT Farms of Mount Ayr had the top yield in district 11 and the fourth largest district yield in the contest. The ELLIOTT Farms entry had a yield of 59,34 bushels with the Asgrow A3127 variety. Craig ELLIOTT and Jack ELLIOTT were honored for the achievement at an awards luncheon at Iowa State University February 1.

Boy Scouts of America month will be observed in February, with particular emphasis being given this week -- Feb. 5-11. The national organization will be 81 years old and the Mount Ayr Scouting program 55, at this time.

Mount Ayr Community junior high school's MATHCOUNTS team finished second in the first round of competition in the national program held in Council Blufs Saturday. The team of seventh and eighth graders, coached by Jim SMITH, placed second overall and first in the smaller school class of the competition. Members of the local team included Dana WEEDA, Kristi MOE, Todd DERSHEID, Nathan SMITH and coach James SMITH.
