Two horses, owned by Gene LARSON, which are smart enough to open gates with their noses, were responsible for a car accident, which happened Friday about 8:30 p.m. in front of the LARSON farm four miles north of Mount Ayr on Highway 169. Lawrence JOHNSON, who was en route to his home in Tingley from Mount Ayr, met the horses on the highway. He swerved his car enough to miss the first horse but was less fortunate with the second and struck it. The animal, a favorite of the owner's twin sons, suffered fractures of its hind legs and later had to be killed. The accident caused several hundred dollars damage to the front of the JOHNSON car, which had to be towed to a garage.

The names of Selective Service personnel slated to receive length-of-service awards have been announced by Colonel Glenn R. BOWLES, state director of Selective Service for Iowa. Designated to receive the "Fifteen-Year Certificate" is Mrs. Lyle NICHOLS of Mount Ayr, assistant clerk of the Ringgold county local board. Awards are in the form of a certificate for each five years of service with the system.

One hundred and ninety-five quail, only a few weeks of age, were released Sunday from the Harold M. ROSS acreage in south Mount Ayr, where they had been raised by Mr. ROSS. In the past six years, 1,167 quail have been raised and released by Mr. ROSS, which have, no doubt, provided good hunting for a number of gun wielders.

Taygold Farm Service Company of Clearfield will become affiliated with FS Services, Inc., on September 1, according to Lee DAVENPORT, county president. This new affiliation resulted from a decision by the Farm Bureau Service Company of Iowa and the Illinois Farm Supply to merge and form a new company. W. E. KELLEY of Redding represented the Taygold Service Company when delegates of the 50-member service companies of the Farm Bureau Service Company of Iowa voted August 1, in Des Moines, to approvethe merger.

The residence property of the late Sarah Mae STRINGHAM, located in northwest Mount Ayr, was sold Monday at public auction to a daughter, Agnes SWOPE of Des Moines, for the consideration of $1,100. The sale was conducted by Vern STRINGHAM, administrator, and Emmet R. WARIN, attorney for the estate. O. B. (Jack) and Raymond HUTCHINSON served as auctioneers.

With the contracting of V. R. GERINGER of Clarence, MO as science and mathematics instructor in the Mount Ayr Community high school, the teaching staff for the 1962-63 academic year has been completed. The GERINGERS have two daughters, who will be in high school, and a son in kindergarten. The family plans to move to Mount Ayr as soon as housing facilities are available.

Patricia PADGITT was a member of the 1962 graduating class of the Jennie Edmundson Memorial School of Nursing of Council Bluffs, exercises for which were held yesterday from the Broadway Methodist Church in that city. Miss PADGITT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claiborne PADGITT of Beaconsfield, was an honor graduate with the class of 1959 of the Ellston high school and is well known in the county for her participation in sports and 4-H club activities. The proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. J. W. PADGITT of Kellerton and Mr. and Mrs. S. L. FOSTER of Hamilton, MT.
