Two Ringgold county students are among eight students at Southwestern Community College in Creston named as ambassadors for the 1998-99 school year. Jennifer ENGLAND of Ellston, a freshman nursing major, and Brandie SHIELDS, a freshman business administration major, are among the selected students.

A Mount Ayr Hy-Vee employee was honored Monday, Oct. 5, at the Hy-Vee annual service awards supper in West Des Moines. Patty STARK of Mount Ayr was honored for 15 years of service to the grocery store in Mount Ayr at the program.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare announced today that Kenneth and Beva MORROW of Diagonal have been named State Advocate Representatieves (STAR's) for Iowa. "We chose the MORROW'S because they have demonstrated exceptional abilities as activists for seniors," National Committed President Martha McSTEEN said.

The old church at the Oak Hill Cemetery northeast of Ellston into Union county has been torn down and a new building is going up to replace it, according to information provided by Nicole ALLDEN. The cemetery has headstones dating back to 1857 and the church located there was recently torn down because it was in bad condition. A new building is being built for $20,000 and donations for the building are being taken. The building will be used as a community building for the area.

Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Mount Ayr is beginning a fund drive to add stained glass windows to the church, which was built in 1992. The church is planning to install six windows in the worship area with two other windows in the parish hall and office area to be purchased as funds become available.

State representative Cecil DOLECHECK of Kellerton has pledged that he will continue to support and vote for the 60 percent amendment to the Iowa constitution, according to a poll taken by Iowans for Tax Relief, a nonpartisan taxpayer's movement.

Neil MORGAN of Kellerton was elected president of the county's largest farm organization when the Ringgold County Farm BUreau held its 80th annual meeting Monday in Mount Ayr. Marty LESAN was re-elected secretary and Joy GOINS of Diagonal was re-elected as secretary while the vice-president position remained vacant due to a lack of nominations.

Annie JOHNSON, daughter of Angi and Darrell DODGE of Mount Ayr and Rich and Rhonda JOHNSON of Tingley, and Brooks BROWN, the son of Jerry and Sheila BROWN of Clearfield, regined as the homecoming roylaty for the Mount Ayr Community high school homecoming activities over the weekend.

A new certified physician's assistant will be working in the office of Family Practice Associates, PLLC, in Mount Ayr. Carol SMITH, PA-C, of Ankeny will be in the office in Mount Ayr Monday through Friday. SMITH will be supervised by Dr. DHAWN, who will be in the office on Thursdays.

Pictures taken by three Ringgold county residents were county winners in the Picture Perfect Iowa contest sponsored by the Farm Bureau recently. Barbara BOWER of Mount Ayr won the county first place in the environmental category with a picture of a cornfield and old barn. Cherri VOS of Ellston won first place in the family category with a picture taken at the edge of a garden. Jenny HOSFIELD of Redding won first place in the community category with a picture of beef burgers being served at a community event.

A Mount Ayr independent insurance agency has been serving the Ringgold county area as a contracted agency with EMC Insurance Companies of Des Moines for 50 years. The milestone was noted in a letter to William H. FRENCH Agency in Mount Ayr recently. Bruce G. KELLEY, president and CEO of the companies, noted the relationship for a half century in a recently received letter of congratulations.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Mount Ayr Vision Center last week to welcom Sandy ARMSTRONG as optician and manager of the business here. The store remains in its location on the east side of the square.
