Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, February 8, 1996

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

A Mount Ayr business was completely destroyed and two businesses in the same building suffered major smoke damage in a fire Monday morning. Athena's House, a local gift shop, was completely destroyed in the blaze, which the fire department chief Rod STARK said apparently began in the gift shop. Receiving smoke and some water damage were Michelle's Family Hair Salon and Brenda's Beauty and Barber Shop, which were located in opposite ends of the red clay brick building. The building is owned by Carl and Phyllis RIGGS of Mount Ayr.

Sone 25 years of bus driving was honored in a ceremony at the joint meeting of the Mount Ayr Community and Grand Valley Community school boards Wednesday, Jan. 31. Marilyn WILKEY, who has driven a bus for the Grand Valley and Mount Ayr Community school districts in the past, has retired from driving and was presented with a plaque by Superintendent Phil BURMEISTER.

Two Mount Ayr Community high school students, Brooke MITCHELL and Darin DOLECHECK, will be taking part in the Iowa High School Music Association piano contest in Creston Saturday.

The granddaughter of a Mount Ayr woman was named Midwest Classic Conference woman's basketball player of the week. Chandra WESTCOTT, a six-foot, one-inch forward, is a sophomore at Grand View College in Des Moines. WESTCOTT is the daughter of Paul and Kathy WESTCOTT of Des Moines and the granddaughter of Lola TERWILLIGER of Mount Ayr.

Rev. Charles E. LUERS of Rock Rapids has been appointed superintendent of the United Methodist Church's 12,000-member Creston district, effective July 1. He will succeed the Rev. Tompsie K. SMITH, who will complete a maximum six-year term as district superintendent.

The grand opening was celebrated at the new Place's Discount Store in Mount Ayr Wednesday, Jan. 31, with Margaret PLACE of Mount Ayr doing the honors.
