Susan SMITH, daughter of Colleen SMITH of Mount Ayr and Ron SMITH of Diagonal, was crowned Mount Ayr Community high school homecoming queen during half-time ceremonies at the football game Friday night. Mike COMBS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gaylan COMBS of Mount Ayr, was crowned homecoming king at ceremonies Thursday night in the Mount Ayr Community high school gymnasium.

Cap factories in Grand City, Pattonsburg and Stanberry, MO will be brought back to a five-day work week before the Mount Ayr Manufacturing Plant is re-opened, Elwood TEETER, operations manager for the Pioneer Cap Co., said last week. The closing of the Mount Ayr plant for a six-week period recently is due in part ot a "plateau" reached in demand for advertising caps, officials said. The plant here specialized in ad caps while the Missouri plants were more versatile, according to company officials. No word on when the plant in Mount Ayr will re-open has been received.

H. Alan SMITH has completed purchase of Paragon Publications, Inc., the corporation that owns the Mount Ayr Record-News, from Jack R. TERRY, effective October 1, it was announced this week.

The ninth annual Ringgold County Historical Society's Iowa Historical Tour for schoolchildren was held Sept. 20, 21 and 22. A total of about 315 children from nine different schools of the area had the privilege of instrctions in various aspects of pioneer life by 22 different authorities from the Society.

Cross country was a new activity at MACHS this year. Members of the team were Laurie KIENE, Valerie DOOLITTLE, Pam COBB, Lisha SMITH, Ron BRAD, Doug SAVILLE, Ben KNAPP, Troy FORD and Stacey HAMILTON.

A good crowd joined in the bidding for the services of Mount Ayr Community Future Farmers of America members for eight hours during the chapter's slave auction at the high school last Thursday night. Over $1,700 for chapter projects was raised during the evening. Jim SMITH of Beaconsfield was auctioneer for the sale.

Gun safety is a brand new course educating students in the safe use and handling of firearms. It will be mandatory for all students born after July 1, 1967 to take this course. The class consists of lectures, films, demonstrations, gun displays and shooting experience. Mr. Larry KIMBLE, Mr. Merrill PERRY and members of the Mount Ayr FFA teach the class.
