Two retiring teachers, Evelyn JAMES and Bertha MIDGORDEN, recall memories of their years as teachers. JAMES taught inthe Mount Ayr school system for 34 years. Her starting teacher's salary was $45 per month and she bought three dresses for $1 to start her teaching career. Room and board were $10 a month. MIDGORDEN was a music teacher at Mount Ayr since 1942. She started teaching at Kent in 1937 for $50 a month.

About 189 people paid tribute to Jack ELLIOTT, past Ringgold County Republican chairman, at the American Legion Hall May 18. ELLIOTT had served in this position for the past 19 years. Cleola GEIST is the newly elected chairman.

Janine Marie BURRIGHT and Francis E. JOHNSON were united in marriage on Saturday, Feb. 24 at a ceremony performed in the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr.

A home town duo won the Mount Ayr Open best ball golf tournament Sunday. Collus LAWHEAD and Bill WARIN teamed up to shoot a 67 to nose out Ed HUTCHINSON and Ken MARKLEY of Lamoni by a single stroke.

Area students who were among 2,186 students receiving degrees at the annual graduation at Iowa State University in Ames were: Phyllis NEWTON PRIEST of Diagonal, master's in education; Joyce Ann BINNING, home economics education; Greg HEWLETT, agricultural business; David GARDNER of Shannon City, animal science.
