Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, January 06, 1983

by Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

The train derailment at Benton this summer in which damage was counted in the millions of dollars and the continued sluggishness of the economy that took its toll on the farm and in the city were two of the top stories in Ringgold county during 1982, a review of the year's news stories shows.

Two first class linemen from Rideta Electric Cooperative -- Max SMITH and Lee BRAND -- were in Greenfield and Pocahontas from Tuesday through Friday of last week helping restore broken wires and poles after heavy ice snapped them.

The Ringgold county board of supervisors has a new look -- and a new majority -- with the first Deomcrat majority on the board of supervisors in many years. Democrat Duane POORE was sworn in as the new member of the board Monday, Jan. 3. Democrat Jim JONES was elected chairman of the board at the January 3 meeting as well. Republican Doyle TRULLINGER is the third member of the board of supervisors.

Ringgold county recorded its third traffic fatality of the year Friday when Ronny Wayne GARNER, 20, Diagonal, was killed in a one-car accident five miles south of Diagonal on Highway 66 about 6:50 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31.

Kathy SHIELDS will be installed as worthy matron of Mount Ayr Order of the Eastern Star #356 at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Mount Ayr Masonic Temple.

Four students from the Mount Ayr Community junior high have been selected to participate in the annual Southwest Iowa Bandmasters Association junior high honor band on Monday, Jan. 17, in Red Oak. The students participating are Angi SMITH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve SMITH; Corey BICKERS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary BICKERS; Dave GREENE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom GREENE; and Doug WEBB, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim WEBB, all of Mount Ayr.
