The first loads of gravel which will provide the base for the new hard-surfaced runway at the Mount Ayr Municipal Airport were unloaded Monday to begin a two-week project to give the airport a new surface.

The 4-H and FFA livestock sale, held as the final event of the Ringgold County Fair, netted the exhibitors $41,166.

A part-time Mount Ayr street crew employee, Walter Dale GROVES, Jr., 30, drowned at a Martin Marietta Aggregates rock quarry located in the west part of Bethany, MO Monday night, August 3. GROVES was reported to have been swimming with two companions when he dived underwater and disappeared, about 5:30 p.m. One of the companions notified officers at 5:45 p.m. and staff of the Bethany police department, Harrison County sheriff's department and the Missouri Highway Patrol responded. Two employees of the Bethany ambulance district dived in, trying to locate the body but were unable to find GROVES. Dragging operations were started. At 7:05 p.m. GROVES' body was found in about 15 feet of water at the quarry.

Several mothers who felt the need of a pre-school for their children gave birth on October 25, 1974 to a non-profit corporation which operates a non-denominational organization of Big Bird Nursery, Inc. Teachers for the 1987-88 year will be Deanna (Mrs. Jerald) ADAMS of Kellerton, head teacher, and she will be assisted by Julia (Mrs. Doug) McKERN of Mount Ayr.

Among the winning livestock at the Ringgold County Fair last week were DeAnna FARIS of Mount Ayr who showed the champion commercial cow-calf project; Mike SHIELDS of rural Diagonal took many of the top honors in the sheep show including bringing the top pen of three; DiAnna FARIS showed the reserve champion market beef and Jackie FARIS of Mount Ayr had the top rate of gain steer.

James "Toad" TULL, six-year-old son of James and Rhonda TULL of rural Diagonal, is in intensive care at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines after receiving head injuries in a three-wheeler accident about 4:15 p.m. Friday, July 31. The youth was reported by those nearby to be riding a three-wheeler near where his father was on a tractor working in a hay field at the Rich JOHNSON farm, just north of Tingley. When young TULL lost control, the vehicle ended up hitting him on the head as it went end over end. The older TULL and JOHNSON brought the boy to the Ringgold County Hospital, where he was picked up by Mercy Hospital of Des Moines air ambulance -- AirLife.

Wishard Chapel Church, located five miles north of Mount Ayr on Highway 169, will have a centennial celebration this weekend, August 8-9.

The hiring of two sets of house parents for the Group Home in Mount Ayr has been done by Ringgold County Group Home board members. Named to the positions are Mr. and Mrs. Duane GLICK of Mount Ayr and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond TAYLOR of Clearfield. The TAYLORS presently are serving as houseparents for Quaker Dale Homes in Waterloo.

Almost 20 people registered during the grand opening celebration at Athena's House of Gifts, Cards and Collectibles, Mount Ayr's newest business, last week. The business is owned by Elbert and Athena STRANGE and is located in the former Gunter Jewelry building at 106 North Taylor.

The Mount Ayr United Methodist Larger Parish will have a new pastor as of September 25 when Rev. Samuel FRY, Jr. and his wife, Betty, arrive from Hamburg, NJ. Churches included are Mount Ayr, Redding and Middle Fork. Rev. FRY will be assuming the pastorate to be vacated August 19 by Rev. Ed KAIL, who will become the Ottumwa district superintendent.

Marlene EGLY has been hired as coordinator for the Ringgold County Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
