RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, August 05, 1993

Lindsay Ricker

Roger GODFREY, a former Navy pilot and longtime elementary principal, assumed the reigns of the Diagonal Community School this summer as the new superintendent. GODFREY replaces Dr. Ray AUCKER, who headed the Diagonal system for one year before taking a job nearer his home in Pennsylvainia.

A Mount Ayr Community high school student participated in a recent track trip taken by the USA Track and Field Club of Nebraska, which included Iowa. Jody DENNEY, 17-year-old senior-to-be of rural Mount Ayr, was among the 58 men and women tracksters and six coaches, including Atlantic girls track coach Bruce HENDERSON, formerly of Mount Ayr, who were part of an 11-day tour of Asia that was billed as a cultural exchange/track trip. The group visited countries such as China, Hong Kong and Korea and participated in track meets in China.

Fifteen Mount Ayr Community high school students and four adults will be on the Yucatan Penninsula from August 9-12, as part of the Spanish Club's trip "south of the border." The group has been working for two years on fundraisers that are helping finance the trip.

Lloyd JOHNSON, a veteran Mount Ayr volunteer fireman, was honored for his 30 years of service by the Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department at the group's yearly picnic in Judge Lewis Park Tuesday night. JOHNSON has retired from active service with the local fire department.

Six Raiderettes and three Raiders were included on the Pride of Iowa conference softball and baseball teams while four students made the academic athletic teams for the summer. Named to the first team girls' squad were Brandi LININGER, Teena SHIELDS, Cindy WALTERS, Tara GROVES and DiAnna FARIS. Raiders named to the second team all-loop squad were Shannon BARNES, Andy DUGAN and Lafe DUKES. Named to the academic athlete teams were Brad POPPE, Di FARIS, Cindy WALTERS and Dana WOODS.
