High cattle prices recently have had an undesirable effect for some area beef producers. There have been 27 head of baby calves taken from Ringgold county farmers in the past three weeks, according to Ringgold county sheriff, Elbert STRANGE. There also has been some stealing at abandoned houses in the county.

Parnassas Chapter, National Honor Society, held its annual induction of new members Monday night at the Mount Ayr Community high school gym. New members initiated were Rod HINTZ, Ellen McALEXANDER, Amy FRENCH, Elizabeth SCHNOOR, Martha WAUGH, Julie YEAROUS and Susan EASON, all juniors, and seniors, Cathy MANNING, Delores MONDAY and Dwayne CAMPBELL.

Winners in the Cub Scout pinewood derby held last Tuesday were Todd KRAMER, best design; Jerry SICKELS, first place racer; and Roby SHAHA (racing his brother Cody's car), second place racer.

Mount Ayr resident Mary Jane PARK is featured in a story telling of her fame as one of the Midwest's leading accordianists and the different bands she led including The Royal Ambassadors and an all-girl orchestra. She enjoys the current revival of big band music.

Candidates for the American Choral Directors Association award as outstanding senior vocal musicians are these MACHS students: David SMITH, Lee MEKUS, Bruce HENRY, Shelly WILKINS, Helen BOESE, Linda WEEDA and Julie HAROVER.

Spec. 4 William E. BARBER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne BARBER of Ellston, recently participated in the first Return of Forces to Germany (REFORGER) exercise to be held in the winter. BARBER is a truck driver with the 1st Infantry Division in New Ulm, Germany.
