Response to the Red Cross bloodmobile drive in Mount Ayr Monday was overwhelming following the events of September 11 with 27 more units of blood received than the goal for the October visit. A total of 166 people came to give blood and 147 were able to give blood. The Mount Ayr site had 40 walk-ins and 24 new donors this visit.

Mount Ayr Community high school's Raider marching band placed third in the street marching competition at the Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree in Clarinda Saturday.

Crestland Cooperative of Creston, which has a branch facility at Benton in Ringgold county, has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, seeking protection from creditors while the cooperative has time to reorganize.

Kraft Foods and Affiliated Food Stores held a drawing for a silver scooter last week. Community Grocers manager Jeff HAUGLAND was on hand to give the scooter to the winner, Joe RICKER of Mount Ayr.

A Mount Ayr Community drill team member has been named to the All Iowa Honor Drill team. Holly MEESTER will represent the MAC squad as a member of the kick squad when this drill team performs at the state girls basketball tournament in Des Moines.

A large sweet potato was recently dug up in a Mount Ayr garden. Virginia POWELL of Mount Ayr dug up a four-pound sweet potato.

Placing first in the senior division of the Bill Riley Talent Search at the Autumn in the Ayr celebration was Landi McFARLAND of Ellston. McFARLAND played a soprano saxophone solo entitled "Adagio and Allegro."

A car and a truck won top prizes in the annual Autumn in the Ayr car show during the celebration Saturday, Sept. 22. Named best of show in the stock competition was Bob CHRISTENSEN'S 1967 Cadillac. Named best of show in the modified competition was Ron BOLINGER'S 1950 Chevrolet 3100.
