RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, July 03, 1980

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Tim NEWTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. NEWTON of Kellerton, returned home Monday after a three-week stay in Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Tim was injured June 10 in a bicycle-car accident in Des Moines and has been hospitalized since that time. He had two broken bones in his right leg and a broken bone in his left leg. A body cast was applied last week because one break was so high up on his leg. The body cast is expected to be on four weeks.

Rinngold county recorded its third traffic fatality this year in a pickup-motorcycle accident in Kellerton June 26. Killed was Dwight Homer TURNBULL, 18, of Eagleville, MO. TURNBULL was driving a 1976 Honda motorcycle south on the blacktop road on the west edge of Kellerton when a 1979 GMC pickup driven by Nicholas Harvey CAMPBELL of Route 1, Kellerton traveling north collided with the motorcycle as the truck began to turn into the drive of the John BLOUNT residence.

Lela G. (Jerry) GEORGE has retired from the United States postal service after 18 years of service. She began in 1962 as an indefinite substitute clerk and received a career appointment in January of 1972. All of her work had been done at the Diagonal post office.

The unusual hobby of a Winterset man originally from Tingley was featured recently in an article in the Des Moines Tribune. Ted BLUNCK, who grew up in Tingley, and a friend, Mark WILLIAMS, hunt rattle snakes in their spare time. According to BLUNCK, he began hunting rattlesnakes five years ago after viewing a television program about a rattlesnake roundup. BLUNCK is the Madison county engineer, so has opportunity to scout out good hunting locations.

BLUNCK and his partner cook the snake meat and use the hides to make such items as wallets and belts. The two hunters use a hooked rod or plier-like snatcher when hunting the snakes and go prepared with snake-bite kits, anti-venom and protective leggings when hunting.

Kevin Lee CAMPBELL, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry CAMPBELL of Kellerton, has been selected to represent Ringgold county at the Youth Citizenship Conference July 8 to 10.
