Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, February 03, 1983

by Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Lyle GILLILANDS awakened about 3 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, to a smoke-filled house but, with the help of neighbors, were ablet to get some furniture and clothes out before fire gutted the inside of their three-bedroom, frame farm house.

Fire totally destroyed a car after an accident Tuesday night. Janice Lucille BROWN, of rural Diagonal, was driving a 1981 Buick Regal west on a gravel road eight miles northwest of Mount Ayr at 9:30 p.m. January 25 when she went into a ditch off of slick roads during a snowstorm. The car caught fire and burned up, totally destroying the car. The Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene of the accident. No injuries were reported in the accident.

Ellen and Carroll HUFF were acknowledge as "Honored Members of the Year 1982," during the annual meeting of the First Christian Church of Albany, OR, held January 9. THe HUFFS are the son and daughter of Mrs. Ted HUFF and Mrs. Franklin SPURRIER of Mount Ayr.

Doris HANKS ENABNIT (mother of Eugene ENABNIT of Redding) got a Christmas gift she never expected. The Clear Lake woman, who has been writing poetry since the 1950s, received a mailing on December 24, 1982 from the publishers of Ideals magazine, containing a royalty check and a copy of the February issue of Ideals -- which contained a poem she had submitted years ago, "Ocean Lore."

  • A baby girl, born Jan. 26, to Mr. and Mrs. Harold RAY, Grant City MO.
  • A baby boy, born Jan. 30, to Mr. and Mrs. Douglas PICKERING, Grant City MO.
