The holiday season is officially open this week with the annual tree lighting ceremony tonight on the square in Mount Ayr.

Pictured with Santa Claus, who made his debut in Mount Ayr at Place's, are Joshua KRAACK, Sara COMER, William COMER and Terri COMER.

Jennifer FARIS of rural Mount Ayr was crowed Ringgold county beef queen at the annual meeting of the Ringgold County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen held recently. Named Ringgold county CowGal was Pam SHAHA of Mount Ayr.

Area farm families who were named award winners at the Ringgold County Soil and Water Conservation district's annual awards metting were Mr. and Mrs. William LYNCH of Redding, named the district's conservation achievement award winners, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe DeBARTHE of rural Lamoni, named the district's outstanding cooperators in the West Fork of Big Creek Watershed.

Wayne BOHN of Mount Ayr is featured in a story this week about his 32 years spent as a prison guard at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison which began in 1956.

Ringgold county sheriff Lyle MINNICK was presented a plaque from the National Child Safety Council in recognition of his department's 11 years of cooperation in the safety education program with county youth.

Five generations of a family on two sides were recently together in Ringgold county. Family members pictured were Brady Lee CAREY, Brady's mother Ryanne CAREY, grandmother Janet HOUGE, great-grandmother Betty SNETHEN and great-great-grandmother Lois CREVELING. Brady and his mother were also pictured with grandfather Lyle E. HOUGE, great-grandmother Irene HOUGE and great-great-grandmother Leota HOUGE.

With the dedication of the Norma Osborn Library at the Noland School Child Development center in the Independence, MO area, came honor to a 1948 Beaconsfield high school graduate, Norma OSBORN. She retired in 1991 after 27 years with the Independence school district.

Mount Ayr Community Raider football players who received honorable mention in the Iowa Newspaper Association annual all-state football selections included running back Andy DUGAN, defensive end Josh SHIELDS, linebacker Jim ROTERT and defensive back Drew LARSEN.
