Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Stephen SMITH, eight, suffered severe injuries to his left foot Tuesday morning while riding on a trctor with his father, Howard SMITH, as they were cultivating corn at the farm south of Mount Ayr. Stephen's foot slipped and was caught in the gears of the tractor. His shoe was torn off and his foot was badly lacerated and a piece of the heel bone was chopped. Thirty-five stitches were required to close the wounds. Stephen remains a patient in the Ringgold County Hospital.

Kay WILLEY and Maryann GEPNER of Mount Ayr escaped serious injuries Sunday evening about 5 p.m. when the pickup drive by Miss WILLEY went off an embankment and overturned. The accident happened about eight miles south of the Lyle GILLILANDS in Riley towship. After meeting a tractor, the pickup which was headed north, hit some loose gravel and Miss WILLEY lost control of the vehicle, which left the road, went over a 15-foot embankment and overturned.

Miss GEPNER, who was thrown from the pickup, suffered a broken collar bone and cuts on her hand, and Miss WILLEY suffered head injuries, shock and bruises. They were brought by Supt. V. R. BRNHOUSE of Kellerton to the Ringgold County Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Miss GEPNER was released later in the evening and Miss WILLEY remained a patient in the hospital for observation and treatment. The 1948 Chevrolet pickup, owned by Miss WILLEY'S father, C. O. WILLEY, was demolished.

Mr. LEWIS received the L.L.B. degree from Drake in 1905 and is presently serving as judge of the third judicial district in Iowa.

Lee HOOVER, an instructor for the past two and one-third years in the Corning high school, has accepted an interim appointment of one year at the Northwest Missouri State College, Maryville, MO as an instructor in the business education department. Fire of undetermined origin caused the total loss of a barn and a crib on the Frank McDONALD farm, five miles northwest of Diagonal, Saturday afternoon. Some hay, grain, implements and two calves were lost with the barn. A plow and tractor near the barn and crib were extensively damaged. The crib contained several hundred bushels of sealed corn and some corn that was not sealed.

Jack D. SHIFLETT, operator of the farm, stated that he had been in the barn to get a hammer a short while before the fire. The two small SHIFLETT children who were at the barn reported that they heard a loud noise, saw the flames and then ran to the house to get help to try and save the calves. Mr. SHIFLETT, who had gone to Diagonal, said he heard of the fire as soon as he reached town. When he returned home it was too late to save anything.
