Final arrangements have been made for the observance in Mount Ayr of the 177th anniversary of the nation's independence. The day's program will include a baseball game in the afternoon between the St. Joseph Red Sox and the Mount Ayr Vets, two band concerts in the evening, followed by fireworks. Six organizations join in the sponsorship of the event, including Ringgold Post No. 172, American Legion; Mount Ayr Post No. 8881, V.F.W.; Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Ayr Businessman's Club; Mount Ayr Lions Club; and the Mount Ayr Business and Professional Women's Club.

Dr. Duane MITCHELL and Dr. George H. RODGERS announce the opening of offices for the practice of medicine in the Rhoades building on the west side of the square in Mount Ayr. Both doctors have just completed their internship in the Kansas City General Hospital in Kansas City, MO. Dr. MITCHELL and Dr. RODGERS both attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, where they received B.S. degrees in medicine and received their M.D. degrees from the University of Colorado at Denver in 1952.

One hundred and sixty children and adults are enrolled in swimming classes under the direction of Miss Mary Jane EDDY, at the swimming beach, known as the city reservoir. The swimmers are divided into five groups including beginners, intermediate, swimmers, junior life-saving and senior life-saving. Miss EDDY recently completed a course at the American Red Cross Aquatic school at Bloomington, IL.

The Mount Ayr Vets baseball team lost a pitching duel at Creston Thursday night, 3 to 0, and crushed Osceola Sunday on the local diamond, 13 to 4. "Skip" EASON pitched good ball for the Vets, striking out seven and allowing but six hits.

The formal opening of the Horton Nursing Home, four miles north of Mount Ayr on Hwy. 169, was held Sunday. The building, known as Ringgold county farm, was remodeled and has been equipped to provide care for 48 patients. The expense was shared by the county and the Horton Brothers of Winterset, operators of the new home.

Miss Laverne DEEMER and Neil Laverne KIDNEY were united in marriage Friday evening, June 5, at 7:30, in the Methodist parsonage in Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island, WA. The bride is the daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Albert DEEMER, and the groom is the son of George KIDNEY, all of Mount Ayr.

Miss Mildred E. MOORE and Paul M. ROGERS, both of Mount Ayr, were united in marriage June 17 at four o'clock, in the chapel of the First Baptist church in Red Oak. The Rev. Lloyd LATTA read the nuptial vows.
