RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, January 02, 1964

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Howard E. RICE, Republican, of Athens township, assumed his duties January 2 as a member of the board of Supervisors for a three-year term. He succeeds Ernest BASTOW of Tingley, who concluded three three-year terms in the office. The oath of office was administered at high noon by county auditor Albert DRAKE. BASTOW, chairman of the board, retires after serving continuously since January 1955.

During the annual meeting of stockholders for Hy-Vee Food Stores, Inc., held December 11, in Chariton, Walter PRITCHARD, manager of the local Hy-Vee Store, was elected to the board of directors for 1964.

A national corn-growing championship has been won by the Grand Valley chapter of Future Farmers of America. The remarkable yield of 271.98 bushels, entered in competition with contest plots grown by other F.F.A. chapters throughout the United States, was produced and harvested on a five-acre field near Grand River, on the farm owned by Mr. and Mrs. D. McCUTCHEON and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Roy FOLAND and sons. The chapter, located at Kellerton, has a membership of 45, directed by Evert HUNSICKER, vocational agriculture instructor. In a combined effort, the boys poured fertilizer on the plot, planted 34,000 kernels of corn per acre and hand-weeded the contest plot in an effort to win the championship. Their efforts were rewarded last week when test officials announced the yield as the best in the nation.

Elbert STRANGE, sheriff of Ringgold county, is one of 12 Iowa sheriffs to be appointed as members of the governor's bipartisan committee for improving relations among all units of government.

John D. WARIN of Maloy, a member and chairman of the Ringgold County Board of Education since it was established in 1948, tendered his resignation Tuesday at a meeting of the board in the office of county superintendent of schools, Vera F. DICKENS. Mr. WARIN resigned to assume his duties as a member of the state board of public instruction from the fourth district of 14 counties, to which position he was elected September 4, at the convention held in Oskaloosa. A prominent farmer and petroleum dealer, Mr. WARIN also serves as president of the Ringgold County Fair Association.

Other members of the Ringgold County Board of Education immediately elected Marshal MATTHEWS as a member to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. WARIN.
