Shellie WELCH was crowned Ringgold county fair queen and Brooke MITCHELL was named county fair princess at the county fair Sunday night. Shellie WELCH, 16, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ken HUNT of Mount Ayr and Richard WELCH of Lamoni, was chosen from the 12 contestants as the fair queen and the county's entry in the state fair queen contest at the Iowa State Fair later this month. She was crowned by the 1983 Ringgold county fair queen, Beth STILL of Kellerton. Runners-up for the queen title were Vanette HUNT, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank HUNT of Diagonal, and Donna POORE, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane POORE of Beaconsfield. Named princess of the fair was Brooke MITCHELL, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve MITCHELL of Mount Ayr.

Other queen candidates included Tammy CANNON, Cheryl CARLSON, Debbie FARIS, Michele LLEWELLYN, Melinda SMALL, Sandra SMITH, Traci TASSELL, Becky WEEHLER and Laura WOOLLUMS. Other princess candidates included Jennifer ENGLAND, Kelly GREIMANN, Erica PETERSOHN, Rebecca QUICK and Aletha SHIELDS.

Among top livestock winners in the 1984 Ringgold County Fair were Cory WILLIS of Mount Ayr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis WILLIS of Mount Ayr, who showed the supreme champion heifer, an Angus-Chianina cross; Tim WEEDA, son of Mrs. Carol WEEDA of Mount Ayr, who showed both the champion and reserve champion market lambs during the sheep show; and Todd CARLSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Les CARLSON of Mount Ayr, had the grand champion market individual hog during the swine show. He won with a Duroc-spot cross. CARLSON also had the top commercial gilt in that competition.

Welcomed to Mount Ayr at a ribbon cutting ceremony during their grand opening was Midwest Ready Mix, a concrete plant located on Columbus Street. Charles CALHOUN and Dick and Rose McCOY of Osceola were on hand with MARC '84 representatives Roger KENDTY, Steve ROE, Di BOONE and Brenda BABCOCK for the ceremony. The McCOYS own the plant here along with plants in other southern Iowa communities and CALHOUN is the local plant manager.

  • July 24, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Terry MOFFITT, Diagonal
  • July 28, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Regan NONNEMAN, Grant City MO
