RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, November 01, 1962

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

A crowd of 98 members, families and guests of Mount Ayr V.F.W. Post 8881 and Auxiliary signed the guest book at the open house and mortgage burning ceremony held Friday evening in the post home.

Doyle THOMAS, wrestling coach of the Mount Ayr Community high school, gave an interesting and informative talk on the wrestling program of the local school for members of the Mount Ayr Lions Club during their regular meeting held Tuesday night of last week. Mr. THOMAS reported that 40 boys were out for wrestling, a sport which is gaining in popularity each year. He also showed slides which explain the rules by which high school wrestlers must abide.

The J. A. CASHEN 160-acre farm, located in Monroe township, was sold last week to Howard BRYANT of Beaconsfield for a consideration of $115 per acre. The farm adjoins another 160 acres owned by Mr. BRYANT. The sale was made through the Carl G. RIGGS Real Estate Agency of Tingley.

The residence property of the late Nora A. WALTERS, seven blocks east of the northeast corner of the square in Mount Ayr, was sold Monday afternoon at public auction to Paul and Ada H. SURFACE for $750.The sale was conducted by Hugh A. FOSTER, administrator; Grant L. HAYES, attorney, and Dennis OWENS, auctioneer.

Neighbors and friends picked corn Monday for Ora MILLER, who returned last week from the hospital. Equipment provided included 10 pickers, three elevators and other equipment.

The Mount Ayr Raiders earned their fifth victory against two defeats as they overpowered last year's Number 1, Class II Griswold, 53 to 0, Friday night on the losers' field. The victors never played a better game this season, as they dominated play after the first minute and one-half of the first quarter. Top performance honors would have to go to the blockers and the defensive line. The raider coaching staff pointed out certain individuals who played above their usual game on defense -- Dale STEPHENS, junior guard; Alvin SICKELS, sophomore end, and the twin-terrors, Rick FARRELL and Ed PINE, tackles. Griswold, loser of only one game this season, came into the game against Mount Ayr boasting of one of the finest backs in southwest Iowa, Bobby MEYER. MEYER finished the evening with only a 10-yard net against the Raider defensive unit.
