Joseph STERLING was born in Ohio. He enlisted during the Civil War at age 37 from Eddyville IA 02 Sep 1862 & mustered in the same day to Co. E 2nd IA Infantry as a Private. He later transferred to Co. C of the 2nd Consolidated IA Infantry, stating his residence was in Decatur Co. Iowa. He was mustered out 01 Jun 1865, Washington, D. C.

Joseph was interred at Caledonia Cemetery, Caledonia, Ringgold County, Iowa.
