Amon Hunt, his two brothers and four cousins all served in World War II.Amon enlisted in 1944 at Grant City, MO at the age of 19. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard
Wood, MO and additional training at Camp Roberts. MO.
He then sailed out of San Francisco with his next stop New Guinea. He was then shipped to the Linguyan Golf where he fought in the
battle of the Philippines.
One of his many memories is being on the front lines in a fox hole when a grenade fell into his hole. He jumped out and ran up the hill to another fox hole and jumped in. To his surprise the fallen soldier in the foxhole was a live Japanese soldier.
Amon fought through the liberation of the Philippines and was scheduled to be on the second wave of forces in the invasion of Tokyo, Japan. PFC Hunt developed malaria prior to the invasion so the war was over for him. He returned to the United States where he married and had two sons and three daughters.
Amon spent the rest of his life farming and now resides in Clearview Nursing Home.
