During World War II, Benjamin "Ben" HILL entered the U.S. Army on January 14, 1942, and went to Camp Callan, California for basic training. He sailed on January 7, 1943 to Oran, North Africa and later was sent to Italy. After serving a year with anti-aircraft units, Ben was transferred into Company F of the 309th Infantry in France and Germany. Most of Ben's time in Europe was in the 5th Army under the command of General Mark CLARK.

While serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatres, Ben was awarded six bronze stars. He sailed back to New York in October of 1945, and was sent to Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. There, he was discharged as a corporal.
