The 242nd was organized in Camp White and remained the same during World War II after the men finished basic training. An artillery battalion was organized in batteries instead of Companies. In the 242nd there were three firing batteries - A, B, C - each comprising approximately 100 men and four 105mm Howitzers. The Service Battery comprised of about 100 men who supplied all of the food, ammunition, clothing, supplies, and gasoline for the command cars, jeeps, and trucks. The Headquarters and Headquarters Battery was made up of commanding officers, communications, and fire direction. The first Commander was Major GOODRICH, then Major BROWNLOW who was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel
