THE 4th IOWA INFANTRY

The Fourth Iowa Infantry was organzied under the proclamation of President Abraham LINCOLN, dated May 3, 1861. The 4th's companies were mustered into service of the United States at Camp Kirkwood, located near Council Bluffs, and at Jefferson Barracks, located near St. Louis, Missouri, during the period between August 8, 1861 to August 31, 1861.

During the Civil War, Jefferson Barracks also served as a military hospital for both the Union and Confederate troops and a recruitment depot for the Union Army. As a hospital complex, Jefferson Barracks could hold up to 3,000 patients. By the end of the Civil War, well over 18,000 had been treated at the hospital. In 2002 the Missouri Civil War Museum was founded and restored the site.

The first offical orders of the 4th was to employ the companies in an expedition to the southern Iowa border to repel a threatened Rebel invasion from Missouri. Major General Grenville Mellen DODGE (1831-1916), pictured at right, reported that the Rebel force disbanded and scattered upon the approach of the Iowa troops. As other companies arrived at Camp Kirkwood, they were ordered to proceed to Jefferson Barracks located near St. Louis, Missouri. By the 15th of August all of the companies with the exception of Companies "I" and "K" had reached Benton Barracks. Companies "I" and "K" were sent to Rolla, Missouri, where the full ten companies of the 4th Iowa Infantry were encamped together for the first time.

ENGAGEMENTS:

Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, also known at Battle of Elkhorn Taven, fought on March 7th and 8th, 1862 at Pea Ridge located near Bentonville in northwestern Arkansas. This was one of the few battles in which the Confederate forces outnumbered the Union Army. The battle was a Union victory which gave Union forces control of the State of Missouri.

Battle of Fort Hindman, also known as the Battle of Arkansas Post, located approximately 8 miles southeast of Gillett, Arkansas, was fought from January 9 to January 11, 1863. This was a part of the Vicksburg Campaign. Confederate surrender.

Siege of Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi, was the final military action in the Vicksburg Campaign. Afer two major assaults on May 19th and May 22nd, the seige began on May 25th of 1863. With no re-enforcement and supplies nearly exhausted, the garrison ultimately surrendered after a 40-day siege on July 4th. This, along with the capture of Port Hudson on July 9th, gave Union forces command of the Mississippi River, which was held throughout the remainder of the Civil War. As a result of this action, the city of Vicksburg refused to celebrate the 4th of July for the next 80 years.

Siege of Jackson, a part of the Vicksburg Campaign, in which the city of Jackson was captured on May 14, 1863. This cut off the supply lines to Confederate troops and opened the way for a Union victory at Vicksburg.

Battle of Chattanooga which was the cumulation of the Chattanooga Campaign, a series of maneuvers and battles fought in October and November of 1863. At the end of the battle, a chaplain asked if the dead should be sorted and buried by state alliegance. General THOMAS replied, "Mix 'em up. I'm tired of States' rights." As a result of the Battle of Chattanooga, Union forces gained an undisputed control of the State of Tennessee and Chattanooga, the "Gateway to the Lower South." Chattanooga became the supply and logistics bas for General SHERMAN during his 1864 Atlanta Campaign and for the Army of the Cumberland.

Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, a part of the Chattanooga Campaign, was fought on November 24, 1863. A Union victory, the action was important in assuring Union control of the Tennessee River and the railroad to Chattanooga.

Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, a part of the Chattanooga Campaign, was fought on November 25, 1863. The Union Army suceeded in routing General BRAGG's forces into a retreat to Dalton, Georgia, thus ending the Chattanooga Campaign.

Battle of Atlanta, Georgia, also known at the Battle of Decatur, was fought on July 22, 1864, which was in the middle of the Atlanta Campaign. Atlanta did not fall until six weeks later. The fall of Atlanta had far-reaching political and military effects during the remainder course of the Civil War.

Battle of Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia, was fought between August 31 to September 1, 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign. This was the final battle in the Atlanta Campaign. General SHERMAN occupied the city the following day, September 2nd. This opened the way for SHERMAN's March to the Sea and the destruction of the Army of Tennessee. Historians have argued as to whether SHERMAN's failure to take Atlanta would have led to Abraham LINCOLN losing the Presidential election to General George B. McCLELLAN. The fire scenes in 1939's film Gone With The Wind depict the result of General HOOD's order of the destruction of military supplies as he and his troops evacuated Atlanta.

Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, was found between March 19th and 21st, 1865 near the present-day town of Four Oaks, a part of the Carolinas Campaign. This was the last major battle fought between the armies of General William T. SHERMAN and General Joseph E. JOHNSTON. General JOHNSTON surrendered at Bennett Place, located near Durham Station. Coupled with General Robert E. LEE's surrender in April, the Civil War came to an end.

During the Civil War, the 4th Iowa Infantry suffered the loss of 6 officers and 109 enlisted men who either were killed in action or died from wounds. 2 officers and 285 enlisted men died of disease, making a total of 402 fatalities.

VOORHIES, Cornelius, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Ohio. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 22 years on March 1, 1862; mustered into service on March 1, 1862. Died of smallpox at Memphis, Tennessee on February 7, 1864. NOTE: Some records list Pvt. VOORHIES as serving with Company K of the 4th Iowa Infantry.

TOURENCE, Barnum S., Benton, Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - New York. Enlisted at age 25 as a Private on March 28, 1864; mustered into service on April 21, 1864. Mustered out of service on July 24, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

TOURANCE, George A., (Veteran.) Benton, Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - New York. Enlisted at age 22 on August 30, 1862; Mustered into service September 9, 1862. Promoted Sixth Corporal on January 1, 1864. Re-enlisted and re-mustered into service on January 25, 1864. Wounded mortally May 19, 1864 at Resaca, Georgia; interment at National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Section K, grave 52.

WRIGHT, William C., (Veteran) Benton, Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - North Carolina. Enlisted at age 22 on August 15, 1861; mustered into service on October 17, 1861. Re-enlisted and re-mustered on January 25, 1864. Mustered out of service on July 24, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

KINSMAN, Wm. H., 2nd Lieutenant. Age 27 from Council Bluffs, Iowa; nativity - Nova Scotia. Enlisted on July 10, 1861; appointed 2nd Lieutenant on August 8, 1861; mustered into service on August 8, 1861. Promoted to Captain on October 10, 1861. Resigned on September 17, 1862 to accept a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Infantry. During the Battle of Pea Ridge, Lt. KINSMAN with Company B and two companies of the 24th Missouri were deployed as skirmishers on the extreme left of the Division and efficiently held the left flank against a massively superior Confederate force.

Promoted as 1st Lieutenant on September 5, 1861, and commanded the company at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas on March 7, 1862. Killed in battle at Vicksburg, Mississippi on December 29, 1862. The G.A.R. Post at Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa was named in honor of Lt. MILLER.

PAGE, Edwin D., Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted at age 26 as a Private on November 26, 1861. Died of pneumonia on March 27, 1862 at Cassville, Missour.

Wounded in right arm during Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas on March 7, 1862. Reenlisted and re-mustered into service on January 25, 1864. Mustered out of service on July 24, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

* The steamer USS Louisiana was built by the Harlan & Hollingsworth Iron Shipbuilding Company of wilmington, Delaware in 1860, first owned by S & JM FLANAGAN of Philadelphia. The US Navy purchased the steamer on July 10, 1861 and commissioned it in August of 1861 with Lieutenant Alexander MURRAY in command. Untill January of 1862, the Louisiana operated along the Virginia coast, blocking the passage of Confederat blockade runners, attacking them at their bases. Then, the Louisiana was ordered to Hatteras Inlet where she patrolled, supported the Union Army troops, and me raids along the intricate water system. In December of 1864 an attempt to blast her failed until the resulting fire ignited her stores of powder. In 1994 a survey of the area off Fort Fisher mapped many Civil War era wrecks but none of the remains could be associated with that of the Louisiana.
