At the age of 20 he commenced to teach and at the age of 23 he preached his first sermon. He continued as student, teacher and preacher until his 28th year, when he was married to Miss Martha A. MULLEN of Story county, Iowa, and entered the regular ministry.

He is a preacher of the fourth generation, his father, grandfather and great grandfather all having been ministers. He also has a brother who is a minister and a sister who is a missionary in Hyderabad, India.

The Quarterly Review says of him: "Two characteristics whih enter into all his work are conscientiousness and intense earnestness. He leaves no stone unturned to put all his work in the very best shape."
