Notice to Select and Return Names of Persons to Serve as Jurors

To the Election Board of             Precinct,           Ward,   of
HAZEL DELL Township, in said County:

GENTLEMEN: You are hereby notified, that, in accordance with the Laws of the State of Iowa, you
are hereby required to select and return herewith the names of the number of persons below stated, to serve as
Jurors for the years 1917 and 1918 as follows:

For Grand Jurors  3; Petit Jurors 32; Talesmen _________

EXTRACT FROM SECTION 335, CODE of 1897

                * * * * “The talesman list shall be made from names of persons who reside in the City or Town in which the
District Court is held and the townships in which such City or Town is located; but if according to the last
State or National Census there be less than one thousand inhabitants in the territory from which talesman are required
to be drawn, such lists may include residents of another township next nearest the Court House.” * * * *

You will therefore select no talesman unless called for above.

Qualification of Persons to be Selected to Serve as Jurors

            “All qualified electors of the State, of good moral character, sound judgment, and in full possession of the senses
of hearing and seeing, and who can speak, write and read the English language, are competent jurors in their respective
counties.” (Sec. 332, Code of 1897.)

Persons Exempt from Service as Jurors

            “The following persons are exempt from liability to act of jurors: All persons holding office under the laws of
the United States or this State; all practicing attorneys, physicians, registered pharmacists, and clergymen; all acting
professors or teachers of any college, school or other institution of learning;  and all persons disabled by bodily infirmity
or over sixty-five years of age; active members of any fire company; any person who is conscientiously opposed to
acting as a juror because of his religious faith.” (Sec. 333,Code of 1897.)

                “Such lists shall be composed only of persons competent and qualified to serve as jurors; and the judges of election
* * * shall omit from said lists the name of any person who has served as a Grand or Petit Juror in a court of record
since January first preceding, and shall also omit the name of any person who has served as Judge or Clerk of the
General Election in the year in which said Jury List is prepared.” (Sec. 337, Code Sup.1907, as amended by 33d G.A.)

Persons Exempt from Service as Jurors

            “Any person while an active member of any fire engine, hook and ladder, hose or any other company for the
extinguishment of fire, or the protection of property at fires, under the control of the corporate authorities of any City
or Town, shall be exempt from * * * serving as juror. Any person who has been an active member of such company
in any City or Town as a foresaid, and has faithfully discharged his duties as such for the term of ten years, shall there-
after be exempt from * * * serving as a juror * * *” (Sec.2462, Code of 1897.)

                “Any person who has thus served in any company for the term of ten years shall receive from the foreman of
the company of which he shall have been a member a certificate to that effect, and on its presentation to the Clerk, he
shall file the same in his office and give his certificate, under the corporate seal, to such person, setting forth the name
of the company of which such person was a member and the duration of such membership; which certificate shall be
received in all court as evidence that the person legally holding the same is entitled to such exemption.” (Sec. 2463,
Code of 1897.)
