Sioux Falls Eilts Picnic

With balmy breezes, fair weather
On Sunday, June the third
The 20th Anniversary
Of  “The Eilts Reunion” occurred.

Many, many were the cars
That lined McKennan Park
For sure it was more lucky
To those who got an early start.

Never need to wonder where—
No need to walk a lot.
For always there’s the “banner”
“Eilts Reunion” marks the spot.

Everyone brings goodies
The best that they can make
Mrs. Lawrence Eilts brought
A beautiful  Anniversary Cake.

Tho’ no one from a distant state
This time could make it here.
With the count one hundred thirty-six
It proved a record year.

The eldest one was Wm. Eilts
The youngest Carol Lake
Together twas a picture
Anyone would like to take.

The ladies like to sit and visit
The men may pitch horse-shoes
The younger set are up and gone
And the babies take a snooze.

The children romp about the park
Off the toddlers will roam
And just when they seem acquainted
It’s time to take them home.

And soon the afternoon is spent
You’ve heard a bit that’s news
Met the brides just new this year
Collected a recipe or two.

With cake and coffee for a luncheon
And the evening hours near
We say good-bye; so long for now
We’ll see you all again next year.

103 Attended Eilts Reunion At Worthington

The second day of June this year dawned as another beautiful Sunday for the Eilts Reunion of 1957.  The meeting place was City Park at Worthington, Minnesota, where we could enjoy the lake and many took advantage of the speed boat rides.

Scanning the family record it was noted that two sets of twin boys were born into the circle the past year,  Robert Lee and Richard Roy Mulder, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Mulder, of Alton, Ia.  Also Kent Ernest and Kurt Edward Bultman, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bultman, of Hawarden, Ia.  The latter five month old babies were present and were the center of interest while they unconcernedly slept and enjoyed their little play pen.

Also note worthy was a picture, recipes and write up of Mrs. Hollis Becker of Idaho Falls, Idaho.  She received recognition in a recent issue of the Des Moines Register with “New Ways to Cook Potatoes.”  So that we might all have a copy of one of Fern’s recipes, we are including one here.

POTATOE PUDDING
1 cup grated carrots
1 cup grated potatoes
1 cup raisins
1 cup sugar
2 eggs well beaten
2 cups flour (more if needed)
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp allspice
2 Tblsp melted butter
Combine carrots, potatoes, raisins, and sugar.  Add eggs. Combine and stir in well the flour, soda, salt and spices.  Add more flour, if needed, to make the consistency of a cake batter.  Coat all sides of a 2 quart pudding mold (or coffee tin) with butter.  Pour in the batter.  Cover tightly. Place on a tack in a covered pan and steam for 3 hours.  Cool. Store in refrigerator or freeze.  When ready to serve, reheat in oven.  Serve this with old fashioned caramel sauce.  Yield 12 slices.

CARAMEL SAUCE
2 cups sugar
½ cup boiling water
½ cup heavy cream
In a heavy skillet over moderate heat, melt 1 cup sugar and cook until brown.  Gradually stir in water.  Cook, stirring until dissolved.  Stir in remaining sugar.  Blend in cream.  If sauce is too thin, thicken with a little corn starch made into paste with cream.  Yield 1 ½ cups sauce.

Following are the names of those attending the family reunion:
