Duane Craig Youmans was born on June 8, 1930, in Aitkin Minnesota. His parents were Herbert Youmans and Thelma Craig Youmans. Duane grew up in Aitkin and graduated from highschool in 1948.

After graduation, Duane was an apprentice and learned the tool and die trade from Rudy Larson of the Larson Bait Works in Aitkin, Minnesota. After learning this trade, Duane worked at the Aitkin Ironworks as a machinist. And in 1952, he and Leta Carol McKay were married. This past year, they celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Duane and Leta moved in 1959 to Eden Prairie Minnesota where he worked for Honeywell as a tool designer in the Ordinance Division. During this time, he invented many things, one of which was the Honeywell grenade launcher, that was used during the Vietnam war. This project gained him much notoriety from many professional organizations, including a mention of him in the book of Who's Who.

After this, he was transferred to the Honeywell Research Center, where he worked designing medical equipment for the Mayo Clinic.

In 1967, Duane and Leta and their three children, Christine, David and Kathy, moved to Clarinda, Iowa, where Duane accepted the position of instructor at Iowa Western Community College. Duane became the Coordinator of the Mechanical Technology program. During this time, he was granted professorship status by Iowa Western. Duane spent twenty six years enjoying the opportunity to invest in the lives of many young men and women, preparing them for their futures. On many days, you could find Duane answering phone calls, or encouraging students at his home, where he was faithful to listen and give words of wisdom when they needed it most.

During his retirement years, Duane continued to enjoy his hobbies of working on computers, and enjoyed learning the watchmaking trade. He continued his favorite hobby of gunsmithing. Duane originally learned the art of gunsmithing from his father, Herbert. There has been a gunsmith in the Youmans family from Revolutionary War Days to present time, where that legacy will now end.

Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, teacher and friend, are his wife Leta of Clarinda, daughter Christine and husband Adam of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; son David of Merriam, Kansas; daughter Kathy and husband Dean of Benson, Minnesota; sister Mary of Aitkin, Minnesota; and five grandchildren, Alexis, Chandra, Jenessa, Aaron and Nathan; cousin William Leech of Saganaw, Michigan; along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding in death are his parents, Herbert and Thelma Youmans and an infant brother Herbert Hartley Youmans.

Duane will be missed by his entire family and his many friends from Clarinda. We will hold on to the memories of his gentle spirit, wisdom and counsel, and wonderful gift of encouragement. He will live on in our hearts forever.
