Kinnison, Rosalee J. Sunquist -

Rosalee J. (Sunquist) Kinnison, 78, of Shenandoah, peacefully entered into rest on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Nebraska Medicine - Omaha.  A celebration of life memorial service for Rosalee will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 10:30 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah with Pastor Kurt Hoover officiating.  Inurnment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak.  Memorials are being directed to the family.  Cards and condolences can be sent: c/o Tiffany Johnson - 3525 Park Ave, Des Moines, IA 50321.

Rosalee J. (Sunquist) Kinnison was born on December 6, 1941 to Alvin and Geneva Sunquist.  After graduating from Simpson College she started her career as a teacher, and then a principal in the Essex school district spanning more than 40 years.  She began her teaching career in 1963 as a second-grade teacher. In 1979, she became the Principal, Talented & Gifted teacher and 2nd grade teacher.  After many years of molding and guiding young minds she retired in 2004 only to then return to be a substitute teacher, as teaching was her true passion.  Mrs. K taught many lessons, not only from math (on a real chalkboard), but also reading, lots of reading – showing her students that they are important, that they are blessed, and to always do their best.

As many of you may know, my mom loved to send cards.  She would always fill them with her favorite scriptures or just a simple hi, hello, to make sure you were doing ok.  Mom always asked about others and would send a prayer patch or prayer rock when she knew somebody needed a lift.

Despite her medical hardships, mom forever had a positive spirit and love for the Lord that she shared with others.  She had a strong will to live and an unwavering faith in God.  You did not need to know her personal struggles to see this, it is clear her faith in God gave her immeasurable strength and hope.  One of her favorite verses was Isaiah 41:13 “For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you; Do not fear.  I will help you.”  We know she will continue to smile down upon us, inspire us with the memory of her love and great faith.

Rosalee was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she matched her love of sewing with giving back to the community by sewing quilt tops.  Since 2014, she has quilted over 650 quilt tops.  That’s many miles of thread and many yards of fabric. The teacher in her would turn this into a word problem.  “If the quilt top is 80”x 60” and it has a total of 48 blocks that are 11”x11” and she had made 650 quilts…… how many miles of thread was used?”

Mom was instrumental in leading the Birthday Bag project for clients served by the Local Food Pantry.  Members of her church and friends banded together and have provided over 700 birthday bags that included a cake mix, frosting, candles, colored pencils, a toy and a special pillow case sewn by mom along with a note made special to each child from her.

Rosalee’s greatest love was her family…but everyone knew it was all about her grandkids and great-grandkids.  Oh what a smile the kids would bring to her. Throughout the years of her retirement, the grandkids would come stay with her during the summer.  She would take them to the library, swimming, skating, to the movies and even help them make lemonade stands.  She played many games like Don’t Break the Ice, Kerplunk and did many science experiments and crafts with the kids. Oh, the popsicle sticks and pom poms that were glued and painted.

Survivors include her two children, Thayne Kinnison of Shenandoah and Tiffany (Brad) Johnson of Des Moines;  nine grand-Children,  TJ, Malichi, Levi, Sierra, Erika, Spencer, Haylee, Kleighton and Braxton;  two great-grandchildren,  Kaiden and Hunter;    brother, Bob (Sonia) Sunquist of Red Oak; other relatives; and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Rosie/Mrs. K/Mom - was and always will be an anchor who grounded us.  She was the rock you could hold onto when the waters of life threatened to drown us.  Her love of education and the wisdom she imparted will remain with us as we travel life’s journey.  Her love for reading will live on in her grandchildren and the many children whose lives she touched as an educator.  Her spirit of giving will live on in the quilts and gifts she lovingly sewed to not only warm the bodies, but the hearts and souls of those who received them.  Her strong foundation of faith will live on through the reminders of the prayer patches she sewed, the prayer rocks she shared, and the words of our Lord that she reminded us of.  Matthew 26:13 could describe Rosalee’s faith and gift to this world “Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

Naven-McGinnis, Jeri - Jeri Naven-McGinnis, 67 of Shenandoah passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at her home.

Private Family Services will be held at a later date. Hackett

On August 23, 2020 Jeri Naven-McGinnis died peacefully at her home doing what she loved: Sitting on her back porch, reading a good book.

It is a daunting task to write Jeri's obituary, because she herself had such a command of the English language and a beautiful way with the written word. She could cut to the chase, represent small-town charm with world view intellect, and had a way of effortlessly translating her extraordinary sense of humor and unparalleled wit into writing. Aiding in this was probably her knack for taking on the daily New York Times Crossword puzzle - with a pen!

Jeri was born in Des Moines, Iowa on November 19, 1952 to Dean H. and Claudine E. (Maurer) Naven. Thanks to her father's career in the news business, the family moved often and Jeri grew up in Shenandoah, Fremont (NE), Sioux City, and finally Fort Dodge. She truly hated moving!

After graduating from Fort Dodge High School in 1971, she ignored the advice of her father and enrolled in the University of Iowa's school of journalism. Upon graduation, she went to write for the Pocahontas Newspaper in Pocahontas, Iowa. She then pursued her lifelong love of politics with a stint as field representative for US Representative Berkley Bedell and (then) Representative Tom Harkin.

Jeri eventually returned to Shenandoah in the late 80's to write for the Sentinel and Valley News Today. Shenandoah had always held a special place in her heart and she showed her gratitude by becoming an active member of the community, with involvement in the Southwest Iowa Theater Group (as director, actor, and board member), Shenandoah High School speech program, American Field Service (AFS), the Everly Family Scholarship fund, Tanenbaum Tea (which she helped to found), and countless other organizations.

She leaves behind her two children, Katharine (Kate) McGinnis of Berlin, Germany and Connor McGinnis of Shenandoah. They are left with many happy memories of laughing around the kitchen table discussing politics, books, and Hawkeye football - all with NPR forever on in the background.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Art McGinnis, niece Elizabeth Lyman and other relatives.

Left to tell a few funny stories about life with Jeri are her children, sisters Tammy Murray (Todd) Sacramento, CA, Kim Naven Gee (Gil) Farragut, Iowa and brother Jeff W. Naven (Michon) Harrison, ID. Nieces and nephews: AJ Lyman, Jason Lyman, Allison Lyman, Brian Murray (Sarah), Scott Murray, and Matthew Murray. Her beloved Maurer Cousins: Nancy (Jim) Schoeben, Lainer Urbik, Judy (Bill) Haller and JJ Whitaker.

She truly hated funerals, so her family will respect her wishes by not having one for her. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Memorials can be made to her great loves: Shenandoah Public Library and National Public Radio (NPR).

(If Jeri were to read this, her 'copywriter's' marks would be all over it...)

Gene had a deep interest in farming from early in high school. He was one of 10 recipients of the American Farmer Degree, the highest degree possible, at the national FFA convention in 1961. He continued farming after high school, raising pigs, lambs and milking cows.

On June 5th, 1960 Gene was married to Joyce Davison in Shambaugh, IA. In 1961 they began their family with the birth of their daughter, Jenice. Five boys followed, Donnie, David, Doug, Philip, and Steve.

He continued the dairy until 1980 when he and Joyce sold the cows and Gene began working in the Page County Assessor’s office. Gene really enjoyed his time as Assessor and was active in the state assessor’s association, serving as president in 1992. Before long they realized they missed the herd and they began buying cows again, this time as partners. Joyce milked the cows during the week and Gene milked on weekends. They continued this partnership until 1992 when they sold the herd for good.

In 1994, he lost Joyce after a long battle with cancer.

Gene married Robin Davison May 24th, 1997 and he gained 5 more daughters.

He retired in 2003 and in his free time began attending auctions and started his “collection” of tools, tractors, and anything you could find in a $1 bucket at an auction. He enjoyed antique tractors and attended many shows all over the country.

To say that Gene had the gift of gab would be an understatement. His passion was socializing with others and he never knew a stranger. He enjoyed morning coffee and sometimes attended as many as 5 different groups from College Springs to Bradyville and Clarinda.

Gene was very active in the community. He was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge in Blanchard and later Siam. He was an active board member of the Tarkio Valley Antique Tractor Club and helped to organize tractor drives and was active in many other clubs, committees, and boards.
