Greenwood, Janet Rose Whitehill - Janet Greenwood, 85, of Clarinda, Iowa entered into peace Saturday, April 11, 2020 at her son’s residence in Clarinda. She has donated her body the Nebraska Anatomical Board. A Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held at the Covenanter Cemetery, rural Clarinda, Iowa.

Janet Rose Greenwood left this mortal life on April 11,2020. She was 85 years young and the family believes she did it on purpose to avoid the Covid19 quarantine and having to vote in the 2020 Presidential Election.

Janet was born on November 26, 1934 in the front bedroom of a farmhouse south of Clarinda. Her parents Donald and Ida Whitehill and big brother Edwin welcomed her to the family. Her life on the farm translated into a strong reverence for nature and a desire to be a good steward of the land.

Janet preferred a simple life over one filled with abundance. She would choose a hot dog roast at the farm over a 5 star dinner any day of the week. She loved her farm and would spend hours walking in the timber searching for her beloved wild flowers or a new hickory sapling. In the Spring she wanted to make sure the Wood Duck and Bluebird houses were ready for new residents. She could stand in the native grasses in the Fall and feel the breath of her God gently swaying the grasses around her.

Janet was known for her generosity to others and ability to know what you should be doing differently in life. She offered a charm, wit, and love to those who were her friends. She simply was a loving and amazing woman, along with being an outspoken and spunky lady. Traits that were all bundled into one beautiful package.

She made two mission trips to Columbia (the country, not the city in Missouri) and loved the people and the beauty of the country. She also volunteered at the local elementary school for a number of years. Spending time with students while helping them read, brought her great joy. For over 50 years she served Trinity Presbyterian Church in almost every capacity from Sunday school teacher to church elder. She loved the members of the church and developed many lifelong friendships with them.

She had many talents: she was a wonderful cook and known for her potato salad and fried chicken, which was second only to her mother’s. She may not have been an accomplished bridge player but she played a mean hand of Go Fish, and was a renowned strategist when playing Chutes and Ladders. Later in life her children would realize that she had an astounding memory as she would describe in detail, events growing up in the great depression when she was only 3 or 4 years old.

Janet spent almost 30 years in the Real Estate business. She relished the thought of finding a young couple that perfect first home. She retired from the business in 2005 to spend more time traveling with her husband and discovering new places throughout this great land.

Janet was preceded in death by her loving husband, and father of her four children, John Clyde Greenwood. Three days prior to passing, she said Dad was peaking around the corner waiting on her. She loved him until her dying day when she went to join him for a wonderful Easter celebration in the presence of Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior.

She is survived by four children: John D Greenwood (Shari), Jean A Minor (Duane), Juli L Mace (Tom), all in Clarinda and Joy E Walker (Mark) of Clemmons, NC. Although she loved them all, it is rumored she liked her ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren even more. Over the years Janet and John cherished their relationship with Alma Ncho and her three children, considering them family

BRENDA ELAYNE (MacDONALD) HARRIS

Brenda Elayne MacDonald was born to Jerold and Beverly (Howard) MacDonald (Bella Vista, AR) on March 5, 1961 in Clarinda, Iowa. Brenda was our first child and the first grandchild for Jim and Carol MacDonald and the fourth grandchild for Harley and Vera Parker Howard. In high school she was a cheerleader for four years and drum major for the band. She loved to sing and enjoyed being a member of the school small groups. Brenda and her friends would sit on our porch roof, look at stars and plan the future. On her 12th birthday all of Brenda’s classmates came for a party. Brenda left them to celebrate while she went to the farrowing house to watch her gilt have her first litter of pigs. Her love of animals was second only to her love for her family. Holidays were always more special because of the effort she gave to make them that way. Shopping, crafts, quilting, cooking and playing games gave all of us many great memories. How blessed we are to be her family. As the angels sang to welcome her, Heaven and our hearts became her new home.

Brenda became a big sister to Leann (Harley) Wilt of Onsted, MI when she was 1 year and 5 months old. Being so close in age, a strong and unbreakable bond was created between sisters that lasted through the years regardless of the miles that separated us. We shared so many conversations of our dreams and plans, we were able to live our dream of wintering in Florida the last three months. Traveling together became treasured experiences and many fond and funny memories were made.

A few years later, Brad (Brenda) MacDonald of Shenandoah, IA became Brenda’s baby brother. Brad shared many laughter filled days with Brenda. A favorite memory was being out dancing and Larry missed Brenda’s hand and she fell back, legs up in a dress. She did not want any assistance getting up and made her displeasure with Larry well known. Yes, Brad was laughing but always willing to help his sister out. As kids, showing pigs at the fair and the social status of having a big sister with a fair box were fond memories.

On July 30, 1983, Brenda married the man she loved, Larry Harris of Clarinda, IA a marriage that stood solid for nearly 37 years. Brenda and Larry enjoyed just being together. Every night in the spring, summer, and fall was started off by front porch time, spending many hours enjoying the outside watching the world go by, discussing all the world problems and coming up with the solutions. There were 3 wonderful children born to this union, each having their own unique sets of joy and special experiences. On spring and summer nights, after work and school you could usually find the whole Harris bunch tending and caring for the cattle that the kids showed at the fair. Brenda was a very special girl and will be truly missed. Life will go on, but that certain flicker that Brenda brought to all that knew her will be forever diminished.

Clayton (Samantha) Harris of Clarinda, IA was the first-born child to Brenda and Larry. Brenda took immense pleasure in the awesomeness that she created. Brenda was MeMa to Kingston and Lila who were the light of her life. Brenda’s eyes lit up when she spoke of her grandchildren. My mother was the light to those around her and also feared by most for no reason. She was stuck in her ways and would let you know what she was thinking. We would butt heads but at the end we would hug it out. Although she was stubborn as a mule, she would melt over her grandchildren just being around. My mom was amazing and I’m glad that she gave me the life I have.

Colton Harris became the second child born and Brenda was very active in all things Colton did. She could always be found on a Friday night cheering him on in his and Clayton’s football games. They had a way of communicating without words and jacking with one another. Colton preceded Brenda in death and welcomed her into heaven with open arms. The two of them are singing and dancing with the angels.

Kallen Harris of Lincoln, NE was the youngest child. Kallen and Brenda made the perfect mother/ daughter pair and shared a love for crafting and quilting. Brenda helped Kallen with all of her 4H quilts. Brenda would make trips to see Kallen and they would spend the day shopping, singing in the car and doing some sort of craft project. Brenda was always Kallen’s biggest supporter and their connection was unbreakable.

Jennifer (Caleb) Mincer, Logan (Cailee) MacDonald, Adam (Veronica) Sobotka, Matt (Jenna) Sobotka, Marci (Daniel) Castillo, Jodie Woosley, Jill Brueggemann , Nicole (Craig) Rodosalewicz and Darrell (Erica) Wilt were nieces and nephews of Brenda’s.

Brenda was the sister in-law to Larry’s 3 sisters. Debbie (Mark) Dean Lincoln NE, Karlene (Jerry) Brueggemann Fairbury NE, and Janet (Don) Sobotka, Cortland NE.

Brenda was preceded in death by infant brother Brett MacDonald and sister in-law Karlene Brueggemann, maternal and paternal grandparents, and very loved son Colton Lee Harris, a sadness she could never overcome.

Brenda was a happy person who enjoyed interaction with others, she was a true people person. Prior to her retirement, Brenda had worked at Clarinda Greenhouse and Pella Windows. Brenda owned and operated The Quilt Shop in Clarinda for several years. She was a talented creator of quilts and loved to help others create their own patterns. Brenda was a member of the Quilt Guild and enjoyed many quilting weekends with her friends. Most recently, Brenda worked at the Icehouse in Clarinda. It was not unusual to see her dancing and having fun with the regulars

Owen, Phoebe M. Hosier - CHJ Jan 29, 1934 ; B feb 1, 1934 (2) : Phoebe M. Hosier, daughter of John and Hanna Hosier, was born October 4th, 1841, in the state of Indiana. The family later moved to Iowa where they settled on a farm in Page county, Iowa. Here she grew to young womanhood. Here she was woed and won by a young returned soldier, James R. Owen. Mr Owen had served his country throughout the long and terrible service of the Civil War. After the war was over, he received an honorable discharge and soon moved west to the newer state of Iowa. He was united in marriage to Phoebe Hosier, March 14, 1872. For over fifty years, their's was a happy, God-fearing home, where the will of God was sought daily in prayer and the Bible was the most used book. They early became members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. For years they made their home on a farm four and a half miles northwest of Clarinda. Then later they moved near Hawleyville, Iowa. There they transferred their membership in church fellowship. Where ever they lived, their hospitable home and its latch string out the Circuit-Rider [?]. They freely gave of their time and money to the cause of the Kingdom. Under all circumstances they were the same dependable, reliable folks.

To their home eleven children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Those living are: Mrs Olive Collier of Burlington Junction, Mo., Marshall of Clarinda; Eugene of Creston; Richard of Clarinda; Martin of Corning; Harry of Boulder, Coo; Charles of Gravity; and George of this city. Some fifteen years ago they moved to Clarinda to a house on North Twelfth street. From there in May 1912, the husband and father moved to a better place in the Home on High. Since that time, Mrs Owen has had the tender care of her children. Even with the best of care, however, the sturdiest of bodies wear out. She was quite well however, and on Tuesday morning, January 23rd, she took her peaceful departure to be with her husband and the loved ones gone before in the land of rest.

For over eight-three years Mrs Owen has served her day and generation. She leaves to continue her work and ideals, her eight children, twenty grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

On account of the burning of the Hawleyville church, the funeral services were held at the Pruitt Funeral Home in Clarinda at 2:30 pm last Thursday, January 25th. The funeral services were conducted by Rev L.M. Kirby her pastor, Rev Willis Wells, a former pastor and lone time friend, and by Rev W.H. Meredith, pastor of the Clarinda Methodist church. Four of her grand-children, Mrs Francis Reece, Mrs Roy Johnson, Mrs Allan Gossett, and Miss Virginia Owen cared for the many flowers. Her six sons who live in this section, Marshall, Eugene, Richard, Martin, Charles and George tenderly served as pallbearers and laid her mortal remains to rest in the Hawleyville cemetery.

We desire to express our deepest appreciation and thanks to all for the beautiful flowers and kind acts bestowed upon us during the illness and death of our mother and grandmother. The Owen Family. CLARINDA HERALD-JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Jan 29, 1934
