PFC. LEROY WOODS KILLED IN GERMANY IN U.S. INFANTRY

Was Fighting With The 90th Division Under General Patton

News that another Ocheyedan soldier had made the supreme sacrifice, came in a war department message Monday to Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Woods, stating that their son, Pfc. Leroy Arnold Woods, 27, had been killed in action on December 11, while fighting with the U.S. Infantry forces of 90th Division of General Patton's Third Army. As earlier message, received December 28, had listed their son as missing on that date.

Pfc. Leroy Arnold Woods entered the service on May 1, 1942 and was first stationed near Seattle, Wash., where he was with the Anti-Aircraft Coastal Artillery. In April his company was transferred to the Infantry and sent to Camp Philip, Kansas. In the latter part of last August he was sent to Ft. Meade. Md, where he remained for a month before being shipped overseas. Just before going to Ft. Meade he was home during July on furlough.

Born February 23, 1917, he had lived in the Harris and Ocheyedan community all his life. He was graduated from the Harris high school with the class of 1937.

He spent a year and a half in the Civilian Conservation Camp at Bancroft. He then entered Barbering School at Des Moines and got his diploma. After serving his apprenticeship for eighteen months and receiving his master's degree, he was called to serve his country.

On Thanksgiving Day 1941, he was married to Mary Jane Yungeberg of Armstrong.

Those left to mourn the loss of their loved one are his wife, his parents, a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Slotten, and a brother, Pfc. Arthur Woods, who entered the armed forces in February, 1941, and his aged grandfather at Moreland, Ia., besides many other relatives. A brother-in-law, Corporal Russsell Slotten, entered the service in August, 1942.

Pfc. Arthur Woods, who entered the armed forces in February 1941, is serving with the U.S.Army somewhere in the European area.
