HERMAN ARTHUR THELANDER

People of Harris and community wll be interested to know that a former resident, Herman Arthur Thelander, AOM3-c was one of the 27 men to disappear last December 5 when six naval planes left from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Station on a routine flight and have never been found since.

The story of this catastrophe was given a half page in The Des Moines Register last Sunday entitled "They flew into Oblivion." Herman lived with his parents on the Zierke farm south of Harris and attended the local school leaving here with the family in 1938 when he was 11 years old and moved to near Kinbrae, Minn., where the family still reside. Herman ha just graduated and received his wings at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on the Friday before the ill-fated trip the next Wednesday and received his new rating on AOM3-c. Herman is a nephew of Cameron Zierke of near Harris.
