WALTER A. MILLER, OCHEYEDAN MARINE, IS KILLED IN ACTION

First Ocheyedan Soldier To Make Supreme Sacrifice; Fighting in Pacific Area.

Corporal Walter A. Miller, 29. of Ocheyedan, was killed in action in the Pacific area, according to a telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Miller, of Ocheyedan, December 23. He is the first soldier from Ocheyedan reported killed in action.

The telegram was from the Commander of the Marine Corps and stated that due to the present situation burial was made where his death occurred. Further details will follow.

Walter Miller enlisted in the Marine Corps in March, 1942, at San Diego, Calif. He was sent overseas some time that summer, his parents receiving the information that he had arrived safely at his destination on August 4, 1942.

He took part in the fighting on Guadalcanal, where he met his brother, Willard, who is also in the Marine Corps. The two brothers met sometime in December, 1942. A letter written in November 2 stated that he had been at Wellington, New Zealand, but now was aboard a ship enroute to a combat area in which it is believed he was killed.

Walter A. Miller, son of Mr and Mrs. Leroy Miller, was born near Ocheyedan April 24, 1914. He attended the rural schools. About seven years ago he went to California where he was employed.

Besides his parents he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Herman Endorf of Tulle Lake, Calif., Mrs. John Steenblock, of Sheldon, and Evelyn, at home, and five brothers, Ralph at Tulle Lake, Calif., Albert at Bakersfield Calif., Willard who is serving overseas in the Marine Corp (unreadable). One sister preceded him in death.
