"S" Biographies
Screeden
Herman Screeden Family
My
father was born and reared near Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He
graduated from the University of Minnesota, with a degree
in Dairy Husbandry. He moved to Harris around 1912, and
made butter and ice cream in the Harris Creamery, which
was located on the west edge of town where John
Crichton’s garage was later established. He met my
mother, Maye Umland, and they were married January 1,
1914. They lived in Chinook, Montana, for about two years
where my dad ran a creamery. They then returned to
Harris, and lived on my grandfather’s farm west of
town. My sister, Joyce, and I were born right there on
that farm.
In 1922, my dad purchased the H.A. Wiemer farm machinery
business and we moved into town. My dad also managed the
Farmers’ Cooperative Shipping Association for many
years.
Dad was very active in community affairs. He served on
the school board, the town council, and belonged to the
Harris Commercial Club.
Joyce and I went through the Harris school system. After
graduation from high school, Joyce attended the American
Institute of Business in Des Moines, and then worked in
Des Moines. She later met and married Walter Kent. She
has four children and eight grandchildren, and still
lives in Des Moines.
After graduating from high school I attended the
University of Iowa and graduated from there in 1941. I
served four years as an officer in the army during World
War II, and then returned to Des Moines. I met and
married Dorothy Koetting of Ottumwa, Iowa, in 1951. We
have three sons and two grandchildren. I am now retired,
and we reside in Edina, Minnesota, a suburb of
Minneapolis.
