PAULLINA, Iowa — Gilbert J. Axdahl, 80, of Paullina died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Baum-Harmon Hospital in Primghar, Iowa.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Siloam Lutheran Church in Paullina, with the Rev. Stanley Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Russell West Post 95 of Paullina. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina.

Mr. Axdahl was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Paullina, the son of Bert and Gertie Axdahl.

He attended Paullina schools and graduated from Paullina High School in 1937. He then farmed.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 81st Wildcats Division in the Pacific Theater.

He married Erma Smith on Dec. 9, 1942, in Dakota City. The couple farmed in the Paullina area, retiring in 1980. They remained on the farm.

He was a member of Siloam Lutheran Church, where he served as a trustee and on the church council. He was also a member of the Primghar Savings Bank board of directors, American Legion Russell West Post 95 and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Granville, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Marcia and her husband, Randall Kuehl, of Moville, Iowa, Patricia Burger of Chandler, Ariz., Kay and her husband, George Wernimont of Breda, Iowa, and Lori and her husband, Kevin Brown, of Tucson, Ariz.; a son and his wife, Jay and Christine of Sanborn, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; a sister, Marget Kimblad of Paullina; and a brother and his wife, Lester and Evelyn of St. Paul, Minn.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bentley and Martin.
