REED - KENNEDY

Robert Hamilton Reed, born in 1855 was married to Belle B. Hughes in 1882. She was born in 1861 and died in 1944. The initial B in her name was for Beauguard, named after General Beauguard of the U. S. Army. Her husband Robert died in 1923. There were several brothers and sisters of the Reed family who came from Ohio and Illinois by covered wagon, crossing the Mississippi River on the ice. Some of the family settled at what is now Bellevue, Iowa on the West bank of the Mississippi River.

Our Uncle Alex settled there in the hills and up in back was a tribe of Blackfoot Indians. They were friendly and provided wild game in exchange for vegetables.

Robert and Belle settled two miles east of our town of Elliott. Their family was Charles H. Reed, Ella Reed and Robert Reed, Jr., who was killed in service in 1918. When the elder Reeds retired they moved to Red Oak, Iowa.

Their daughter, Ella was married to William Arthur Kennedy and they moved on to the farm. Their children were Dorothy Mae, Moyne Arthur (deceased) and Robert Kennedy, and Max LeRoy who died in infancy. The families were all engaged in farming, and the farm has been in the family for over one hundred years. Robert (Bob) Kennedy lives there now.
