RED OAK
Population, 5,500. An incorporated city located on the Nishnabotna River, and on the Burlington Route, in Montgomery County, of which it is the judicial seat, 55 miles southeast of Council Bluffs, 90 southwest of Des Moines, and 241 west of Burlington.  It is a healthy city, the death rates being remarkably low; is lighted by electricity; is amply supplied with the purest water for all purposes, and also water works, and maintains good fire department.  Has churches of the leading denominations, high and ward schools, an opera house and armory, paved streets, a commodious court house, 6 banks, good hotels, 2 weekly newspapers, the Express and the Sun.  Grain, live stock, flour, potteryware and beekeepers’ supplies are shipped.  Telephone and telegraph facilities.  Adams Express Company.
