There are 30+ cemeteries or burial locations in Monona Co. I am currently working on providing as much resources on the ones I know of and any new ones found will be listed once I know of there existance. Thank You for your patience in this matter! If you can help in providing info, please email this county coordinator, Linda Ziemann. Thankyou!

Ashton Cemetery--original location near Whiting, Iowa

Located at Ashton which was the first town settled in Monona County and located a few miles north of the present site of Onawa. It was settled in 1851, had a post office, store, etc. and was a thriving community.

Onawa was settled in 1854 and soon drew all the Ashtonites to Onawa, leaving only some buildings that were soon moved elsewhere for housing and the cemetery. Nothing remains to show the location of the Cemetery.

The stones that were moved into the fence line were eventually moved to the  Onawa Cemetery and may be viewed there, however no records of exhumation and reburial are available.
