MITCHELL COUNTY GENEALOGY

Gateway to Osage, Iowa

Circa 1918

Both sides of the gate say, "Our Nations Defenders -- Bunker Hill to Argonne"

One side also says, "Welcome," while the other side says "Come Again."

Since Argonne refers to the Battle of the Argonne Forest in World War I, from late September to November 11, 1918, the photo would have to have be taken after the start of the Battle -- and probably after the end of the war.

It was located on west Main Street in Osage, and was the "World War I Veterans Wall." It was torn down in the 1950's**. It apparently was near the crossing of the Illinois Central Railroad.
