Madison County Genealogical Society

Dues are $10.00 per person or $15.00 per family payable January 1 of each year. A Life membership is $115. Meetings are held monthly with occasional programs. Members receive a quarterly newsletter and free queries.

Madison County Historic Preservation Commission

This county-wide organization fosters the care and recognition of historically and culturally significant physical and natural sites.  Visit their website for historic photos, Underground Railroad participants, and National Register of Historic Places locations in Madison County.

Madison County Historical Society

While there visit the Museum and extensive Resource Center plus the 1856 Bevington Mansion and Stone Barn, Pleasant View log post office, Log schoolhouse, Field Mercantile store, Martin Skelley gas station, Law Office, Tusha Country School, Elmer McKee Agricultural Barn, Blacksmith Shop, Zion Church, and Winterset's Railroad Depot.  Membership  -  $10.00 annually or $150.00 lifetime.

Madison County Court House and Annex

The historic 1876 Courthouse contains the Court, Clerk of Court, and Auditor offices. The County Clerk's office has Civil court and divorce records from 1861, wills, immigration & naturalization records, locked adoptions, probate records from 1852, and guardianship records. 

The Annex, one block west, contains the  County Recorder Office where you will find death records from 1880, birth records, marriage records from 1855, burial records from 1849, and land records.

Winterset Public Library

 

This library holds an extensive collection of burial notebooks for each Madison County cemeteries, plus family histories and local history. More genealogical resources are available on their website.
