Larchwood Centennial Biographies:

The Z's


ZANGGER, CHARLIE, son of Gottfried and Rosa Zangger, was born November 18, 1888, near Remsen, Iowa, and came with his parents to Larchwood in 1902. He was married to Lina Sharp at Estherville, Iowa on January 10, 1911. Lina, who was born December 2, 1884, at Estherville, Iowa, was a teacher in the Larchwood High School. They are the parents of-Edith (Mrs. R.D. Handley) deceased; Clinton-married to Blondina Unruh, Mesa, Arizona, and Russell-who married Marie (Dolly) Unruh, Larchwood. The Zanggers moved to the farm one mile east of Larchwood in 1913, where they farmed and raised registered polled Hereford cattle. This farm was a part of the holdings of Mr. Fell and was previously owned by James Dement. The lumber for the house had been hauled from LeMars, Iowa. Charlie and Lina are members of the United Church of Christ. They are now retired on the farm.


ZANGEER, GOTTFRIED was born in Solothurn, Switzerland, June 30, 1862, and came to America with his parents when he was 16 year old. Rosa Kohler, born July 10, 1864, at Elgin, Iowa, and also of Swiss descent, was married to Gottfried March 2, 1886, at Remsen, Iowa. They were the parents of-Lucy (Mrs. William Herbst), and Esther (Mrs. Frank Mund), both deceased; Charlie-married to Lina Sharp, Larchwood; Wilbert-married to Merle Burris, North Loup, Nebraska; and Roy-who married Gladys Grimm, Costa Mesa, California. In 1902 the family came to Larchwood from Marcus, Iowa and located on a farm one-half mile east of town. It was a part of the Sykes estate, bordered by many trees, which the Sykes had planted. A new home was built on this farm in 1903. In 1905 under the leadership of Rev. Rest, Gottfried, with others, was instrumental in the organizing and building of the German Evangelical Church in Larchwood. Gottfried and Rosa retired to Larchwood for nine years, and later moved to Long Beach, Calif.; where he passed away July 18, 1934, and she on August 17, 1934.


ZANGGER, ROY and Gladys Grimm were married March 3, 1915 at Larchwood. Roy was born September 16, 1892 at Remsen, Iowa, and Gladys on January 30, 1897 at Garrison, Iowa. They were the parents of four children-Keith and Don (both deceased); Lavorrne (Mrs. Al Parker), Sacramento, California; and Vera (Mrs. Harley Waters), Long Beach, California. Roy and Gladys farmed on the Zangger home place east of Larchwood for 10 years and then moved to California, where he now resides in Costa Mesa.


ZANGGER, RUSSELL son of Charlie and Lina Zangger, was born February 22, 1922 at Larchwood. On May 24, 1944 he married Marie (Dolly) Unruh, who was born August 26, 1924 at Hurley, South Dakota. They have one son, James, who lives at home. Besides farming, they own and operate the Zangger Flying Service, with Russell as Flight Instructor and Dolly at Aviation Ground School Instructor. The airport is located one and one-fourth miles east of Larchwood, equipped with hangers and hard-surface runways. They are members of the United Church of Christ.


ZANGGER, WILBERT was born September 23, 1890 at Remsen, Iowa. On September 21, 1918 Wilbert married Merle Burris, who was born September 21, 1891 at Garrison, Iowa. The couple had two children-Charles-who married Margaret Parker, North Loup, Nebraska; and Esther, married to Dr. Ned Raun, Columbia, South America. Merle was a teacher in the Larchwood Public School. Wilbert and Merle farmed two miles east of Larchwood from 1918 to 1924, when they moved to North Loup, Nebraska. They raised registered polled Hereford cattle. Merle passed away September 10, 1964. Wilbert is now retired.
