The D's

 

DANIELS, JAKE was born in Swallmon, Holland, on August 1, 1877. Elizabeth Van Cruchten was born in Holland, March 12, 1883. They were married February 24, 1908, in Holland, and came to the United States the same month. To this union nine children were born, Gertrude Mrs. Irenaeus Ripperda), deceased; Elizabeth (Mrs. Steven Sehr), Joseph, married to Irene Snyders, and Anthony, who married Gladys Cain, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mary (Mrs. Carl Polzin) and Clara (Mrs. Laurence Snyder), both of Larchwood; Minnie (Mrs. Jake Snyder), Graceville, Minn., Anna (Mrs. Frank Sehr), Inwood, Iowa; and Rose (Mrs. Anthony Gacke), Hudson, South Dakota. The Daniels settled in Larchwood, where he worked as a farm hand and later farmed. Jake directed the choir at St. Mary's Church for many years. Elizabeth passed away April 29, 1934, and Jake on May 15, 1947.


DE BAERE, ARCHIE was born in Holland on November 22, 1887, came to Alvord, Iowa., and married Lucy De Smet on January 19, 1916. Lucy was born December 9, 1897. Four children were born to this union-Richard, married to Jean Reinke, LeMars, Iowa; Helen (Schmidt-Mrs. Jack Stevens), Imperial , California; Marcella (Mrs. John Zimmer), Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Frances (Mrs. Ellis Skiles), of Larchwood, where he was employed at the Schonfelder Harness and Shoe shop. In 1918 they started farming south of Rock Rapids and remained there until his death on December 15, 1922. After her husband's death Lucy came back to Larchwood and farmed with her brother, Al, for three years on their father, Dominic De Smet's farm. On February 1, 1926, Lucy married Jacob Wiering, at St. Mary's Church. They had one son, James, who married Joan O'Hara. The Wierings farmed in the Larchwood vicinity for about 35 years, purchasing a farm northwest of Larchwood in 1941. They retired in 1958 to their new home in Larchwood. Jacob passed away April 8, 1963. James now farms the home place.


DE SMET, ALFONSO and Margaret Schettler were married at Larchwood on February 9, 1926. Margaret was born on January 2, 1906, at Wilmont, Minnesota, and Al at Rock Valley, Iowa, on September 13, 1900. They are the parents of three children, Geraldine (Mrs. John Rabusch), Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and the twins, Bernard, who married Fern Ahlers, and Leonard, married to Mary Ann Kloiber, both of Larchwood. Since their marriage, Al and Margaret have farmed in the Larchwood vicinity. They have 10 grandchildren.


DE SMET, TED was born February 14, 1906, at Rock Valley, Iowa. He married Emma Schettler January 15, 1929, at Larchwood. Emma was born November 16, 1909, at Wilmont, Minnesota. To this union were born seven children, Jane (Mrs. Harold Heirigs), Freeman, South Dakota; Donald and Veronica (Mrs. Robert Weins), both of Denver, Colorado; Alvin, married to Darlene Schulte, Cletus, married to Beverly Hoefert, and Gene, all of Larchwood; and Dean, who married Barbara Petersen, Omaha, Nebraska. Ted and Emma farmed in the Larchwood area from 1929-40, at which time they moved to Valley Springs, South Dakota, where Ted operated a feed grinder. In 1943 they returned to Larchwood, with Ted continuing with the feed grinder business until 1953, after which he worked as school custodian and a painter. Ted and Emma have 33 grandchildren.


DE VAUL, LEVI was born near North Manlius, New York, on December 14, 1853, and was married to Adella May Townsend on January 19, 1881. She was born near Mycena, New York, on July 22, 1860. TheDe Vaul family was French and the Townsend family was English. To this union was born five children; Walter, Claude, and Seraph (all deceased); Raymond, married to Ruby Lawson, Dallas, Texas; and Dewey, who married Mary Scott, Larchwood. Levi and Adella moved to Lyon County, Iowa, from Madison County, New York, in 1908. They lived in Centennial Township and on the Parkinson ranch in Sioux Township. They then lived on South Dakota farms but returned to Centennial Township in 1920, where Levi died July 29, 1923. Adella died August 17, 1925.

DOHERTY, LEO was born July 8, 1886, at Clinton, Iowa, and Margaret Janssen, born January 20, 1884, at LeMars, Iowa, were married September 20, 1910, at Anthon, Iowa. They were blessed with nine children,-Leonard (deceased); Father John, Breda, Iowa; Mary (Mrs. Ray Baker;), Bakersfield, California; James, who married Marlene McCarty Ripperda, and Josephine (Mrs. Alfred Viereck), both of Larchwood; Veronica (Mrs. Marion Kalhar) and Margaret Ann (Mrs. Menno Hofer), both of Huron, South Dakota; Cletus, married to Agnes Reines, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Frances (Mrs. Cleo Krier), Pierre, South Dakota. In 1910 the Dohertys came to Larchwood, where Leo had a barbershop for 35 years. Taking over his father's shop, Leonard continued to serve, the fifth consecutive generation of one family. Leo passed away November 5, 1945, and Margaret still lives in Larchwood.

DRUET, DR. A. L. was born July 28, 1877. On January 16, 1901, he married Alice Tuttle, who was born March 17, 1871. They were the parents of two children, Audrey of Larchwood, and Kenneth, married to Marguerite Clark, Reeds Spring, Missouri. The Druets moved to Larchwood in 1913. Except for the time he served in the army, Dr. Druet practiced medicine in Larchwood until his death.
There have been three generations of doctors in the Druet family; Dr. A.L. Druet, Dr. K. Kenneth Druet, and his son. Dr. Druet passed away May 29, 1931, and his wife on April 21, 1954.
