The A's

ANDERSON, MELVIN was born March 16, 1908, in Lyon township, and Oneva Madland, born August 30, 1912, in Centennial township, were married January 23, 1934. The couple has four children-Shirley (Mrs. Russell Gaffney), Brandon, South Dakota; Tamlin-married to Patrick Westra, Auburn, Washington; Deanna (Mrs. Donald Serck), Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Marlys (Mrs. Homer Hastings:), New Castle, Wyo. After their marriage Melvin and Oneva farmed for 30 years in the Larchwood vicinity. They have been house parents at the Children's Home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and still reside on their farm southwest of Larchwood. They are members of Our Savior's Lutheran church. Melvin and Oneva have nine grandchildren.


ANGLUM, WILLIAM DAVID
was born on September 10, 1853, at Coxsackie, New York. His family moved to Iowa in 1854. He was married to Catherine Lorena Paulus on June 11, 1885. She was born on December 12, 1863. In 1893 they moved from Sac County to Lyon county with their two sons, Floyd and Fred. Dave was on the first board of directors of the Farm Bureau when it was organized in the county. The Anglums were charter members of the Ben Clare Methodist church. Dave passed away November 19, 1919. Floyd was married to Ethel Smith. He died on August 8, 1934, leaving his wife and three young daughters-Berniece, Luella, and Joyce. Fred died December 15, 1935. He had painted the picture of "Christ in Gethsemane" for the Community church in Larchwood in October, 1935. Catherine died April 4, 1941.

ASHTON, WILFRED F. (Dodd) was born August 14, 1897. He married Inez A. Grimm on August 2, 1917. She was born January 4, 1899. To this union three children were born-W. Royce (deceased); Shirley (Mrs. Marvin Larson), Madison, Wisconsin; and J. Leslie, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dodd was a rural mail carrier at Larchwood for 47 years and retired October 1, 1965. Inez was a clerk in the Williams General store for several years. They now spend their winters at Harlingen, Texas.

ASHTON, WILLIAM F. (Frank) Sr. was born at Darwin, England, on July 24, 1863. He came to America in 1883 and settled in Florida. Frank married Sarah Victoria Hall, daughter of Captain John Hall, who was a former Confederate Cavalry officer. Victoria was born February 23, 1869. They were the parents of five children-William Leslie and Dorothy (both deceased); Lilias (Mrs. S. Albert Gates), Clinton, Iowa; Wilfred F. Jr.-married to Inez Grimm, Larchwood; and Florence (Mrs. Harry Yonkers), Houston, Texas. Early in their married life, Frank and Victoria planted an orange grove near Kissimee, Florida, still known as Ashton Grove. Victoria passed away September 10, 1900. On August 29, 1905, Frank married Nellie L. McGinnis, who was born June 30, 1868. They became the parents of three children-Mildred (deceased); Kathleen (Mrs. Leonard Carter), Norfolk, Virginia; and Donald-who married Leona Winter, Larchwood. Frank owned a blacksmith shop until 1937. The Ashtons then moved to California where Frank passed away November 11, 1942. Nellie died at Los Angeles, California, on February 14, 1945.

ASPINWALL, GLENN was born in Pearl City, Illinois. He married Mildred Johnson of Lime Springs, Iowa. One daughter, Joanne (Mrs. Dennis Albers), lives with her family at Nashua, Iowa. Glenn was superintendent in Larchwood from 1927-32, and Mildred taught seventh and eighth grade. The Aspinwalls moved to Hawkeye, Iowa, where they operated a hardware and furniture business. He was selected from 23,000 members to serve as president of the National Retail Hardware Association. In 1962-63 Glenn was listed in "Who's Who in America." He passed away July 1, 1970. Mildred still resides in Hawkeye.
