Henry was the son of Hamilton Black and Martha Jane Hollis. He was born in Keokuk, Iowa, and was a resident of Keokuk when he enlisted as a Private on 20 Jun 1864 at the age of 18 years. He mustered in Co D 48th Iowa Infantry on 13 Jul 1864. Promoted to Full 7th Corporal on 5 Sept 1864. Mustered out on 21 Oct 1864 at Rock Island, Illinois. The enlistment was for a period of 100 days. The 48th battalion guarded prisoners at Rock island, in the Mississippi River.
