Rita V. Breen, 68, 601 S. 10th St., Ft. Madison, died at 9:59 p.m. Friday, May 18, 1990 at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1921, at Houghton, she was the daughter of Robert and Rose Benjamin Cooper. She married William G. Breen April 24, 1943, in Ft. Madison.

She owned and operated Breen Newstand for 20 years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, and was a charter member of the Sweet Adelines, of which she has been a member for 39 years.

Surviving are her husband, Fort Madison; one son, Patrick W. Breen, Fort Madison; two daughters, Mrs. Susan(Michael)Huffman, Bryant; and Mrs. Judith(Robert)Carl, Carthage, Ill.; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Cooper and David Cooper, both of Fort Madison; five sisters; Mrs. Lucille Lawlor, Mrs. Louise(Bert)Druppel, both of Fort Madison; Mrs. Magdalen Gehle, Nauvoo, Ill., Mrs. Colleen(Robert)Vliet, and Mrs. Aubreen(Jerry)Tripp, both of Cadillac, Mich

Visitation will be after noon Monday at the King-Lynk Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a wake service at 7:30 p.m.
The service for Mrs. Breen will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's, Fort Madison, with the Rev. John Hyland officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Iowa Heart Association.

BRITTON, GEORGE E.

 G. BRITTON IS DEAD AT 63

Names: Britton, Hueser, Griswold, DeLong, Kemp, Wilson,

   George Britton, 63, 1830 Avenue G, died Monday at 7:30p.m. in Sacred Heart hospital after an illness of two days.

   Born May 24, 1889, in Keokuk, he came to Fort Madison as a small child.  He was married to Margaret K. Huesser (sic)  here on May 1, 1912.(sic)  He was employed by the Santa Fe as a conductor.  He belonged to the Eagles, the Izaak Walton league, and the B. of R. C.

   The deceased is survived by his widow;  three sons, John, Davenport,  George, Jr. and Richard, Local;  two daughters, Mrs. Morris (Irene) Griswold, and Mrs. Vencil (Mildred) DeLong, local;  one brother, Dave, Knoxville;  two sisters, Mrs. Robert J. Kemp, and Mrs. Nancy Wilson, Chicago;  and six grandchildren.

  The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Nieters Chapel with the Rev. George Hoeflinger officiating.  burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery.

  Funeral services for George Britten (sic), 63, 1830 Avenue G, who died Monday, were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Nieters Chapel with the Rev. George Hoeflinger officiating.  Burial was in Sacred Heart cemetery.  Pallbearers werre J.D. Carroll, B.G. Mackey, G.G. Linn,  B. Linn, C.H. Dalton and R. L. Coster.[Griswold.FTW]

BRITTON, MRS. GEORGE (MARGARET K.)

   Mrs. George (Margaret K.)  Britton, 76, 1830 Avenue G., died at 8 a.m. today in Sacred Heart hospital.  She had been ill four months.

   Mrs. Britton was born Oct. 12, 1888, in Fort Madison, and was a lifelong local resident.  She and George E. Britton were married May 1, 1913, in St. Mary's Catholic church here.  He preceded her in death.  Mrs. Britton was a member of Sacred Heart church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.

  Surviving are three sons, John B. Britton, Davenport, and George E. Britton and Richard Britton, both of Fort Madison;  two daughters, Mrs. Morris (Irene) Griswold and Mrs. Vencil (Mildred) DeLong, both of Fort Madison;  two brothers, Leo Hueser and Leonard Hueser, both of Fort Madison;  one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Simpson, Fort Madison;  and 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

  Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.  Her parents were Bernard and Elizabeth (Neuweg) Hueser.

GRISWOLD, IRENE E.

Irene E. Griswold, 83, 2119 Ave. C, died at 4:05 p.m, Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Fort Madison Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.

  She was born Dec.17, 1913, at Fort Madison, the daughter of George E. and Margaret C. Hueser Britton.  She married Morris T. Griswold, July 26, 1941, at Fort Madison.  He preceded her in death November 1978.

  She was a homemaker and sold Avon for a number of years.  She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, Daughters of Isabella and Catholic Ladies Auxiliary.

  She is survived by one son, Michael Griswold, Burlington;  two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Carol) Salli, Schenectady, N.Y. and Mrs. Jeffery (Mary Jo) Creen, Fort Madison; two grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Britton, Fort Madison and John Britton, Davenport.

  Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

  Friends may call after noon on Friday, Oct. 17, at King-Lynk Funeral Home, Fort Madison, where a Rosary will be recited at 3 pm by the Altar and Rosary Society, Daughters of Isabella and Catholic Ladies Auxiliary and a Wake Service will be held at 7 pm.  Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Saturday, Oct 18, at Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. Tim Sheedy officiating.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fort Madison.

  A memorial has been established for Sacred Heart Church or P.A.W. Animal Shelter and contributions may be made at King-Lynk Funeral Home.

Robert John Manka 1915-2004

Robert Manka Sr.

Robert John Manka Sr., 88, of Fort Madison, died at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born June 5, 1915, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Louis Joseph and Ida Mary Menke Manka. On Feb. 17, 1939, he married Vivian Corine Breen in Fort Madison.

Mr. Manka owned and operated Manka Distributing.

He was involved in scouting for many years and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jacqueline Kurtt of Ahwahnee, Calif., and Beverly Brockman of Fort Madison; two sons, Robert Manka Jr. and Michael Manka, both of Fort Madison; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Watson, Maria Teixeria and Ella Teixeria, all of Stuart, Fla., and two brothers, Jerome Manka of Nauvoo, Ill., and Richard Manka of Lanesville, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and a rosary will be recited at 5:15 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Manka will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ss. Mary & Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Madison, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the VFW Color Guard Post 1805, Marine Corps League and American Legion Post 82.

A memorial has been established.
