Elizabeth C. Curtis

Keokuk-Elizabeth C. Curtis, 92 a lifelong Montrose resident, died Saturday April 19, at the Montrose Care Center.

Mrs. Curtis was born Nov 30, 1983 (Yes it does say 1983, but must have been a mistake) She was a member of the Montrose Presbyterian church, Montrose Presbyterian Women, Montrose-Jefferson Township Farm Bureau Women, and was a charter member of the Crusaders Society.

On Dec 25, 1913 at Montrose she was married to Ralph David Curtis who died in 1963.
Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Harvey (Catherine) Seyb, Donellson, four grandchildren and a great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son. Her parents were Emil and Catherine Philp Johnson.
Funeral services were at 2pm Tuesday at the Montrose Presbyterian church. The Rev. James Fyfe officiated. Burial was in the Montrose Cemetery.

The body was at the Schmidt-Vigen Funeral Home, Keokuk.
A memorial was established with the Montrose Presbyterian church.

David Houghton

Well Known Montrose Citizen Is Dead

David Houghton, a well-known citizen and civil war veteran of Montrose, passed away at his home in that city Sunday afternoon, Dec. 23, at 4 o'clock p.m., aged 83 years and two months. Mr. Houghton's death was due to senility. He had been ailing and practically bedfast during the past thirteen months, though he was critically ill only the past two weeks.

Deceased was born in Orange county, Maine, on Oct. 23, 1840. When a young man he came west and settled at Montrose, and was an old settler
of that place.
In 1862 he enlisted at Keokuk, in Co. B. 17th Iowa infantry and served until the close of the war, a period of three years. He was a prisoner in Andersonville and other confederate prisons. After the war he returned to Montrose and engaged in the barber business which he pursued until 1918, for over 50 years.

On July 11, 1866 Mr. Houghton was married to Mary Ann Ray, who survives him. The late Mrs. Chris. Hamma of Sonora was a sister. Besides his wife there are no other near relatives, except nephews and nieces, who are: David and H.H. Hamma of Sonora, Frank Hamma of Davenport, W.J. Hamma of Hamilton, Mrs. Mary Corse of Keokuk, Mrs.Lizzie Noles of Montrose, Mrs. Sadie Ballinger of Rock Island, Mrs. Nellie Trickett of Minneapolis, Mrs. Amy Crosby of Keokuk and Mrs. Ed Herbert, Hamilton.

Mr. Houghton was a man of many good qualities, and he led a quiet and upright life.

He was well known in Nauvoo.

The funeral will take place from the L.D.S. Church in Montrose Wednesday at 2:30 o'clock, Elder Geo. P. Lambert officiating.

[Note: the niece named "Mrs. Mary Corse" is a mis-spelling of the name "Mrs. Mary Carss".]

John R. Reid

A funeral for John Richard Reid, 50, of rural Montrose, Iowa, who died at 10pm Thursday, March 31, 1983 in Veterans Memorial Center at Iowa City, was held at 1:30pm Saturday at the Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison with Rev. L. J. Bergthold officiating. A moose Club memorial service will be conducted with the funeral service.
Burial was at the Montrose Cemetery.

A memorial is established with St. Jude's Research Hospital.
He was born Oct 17, 1932 in Gregory Landing, Mo, the son of Frisby M. and Gladys (Foley) Reid. He married Kay Knobbs in Keokuk on April 13, 1957.

He lived in Montrose for 17 years and was an Iowa State Penitentiary corrections officer. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Montrose and was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War with 11 years of active duty. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a manager and secretary of the Fort Madison Moose lodge. He graduated from St. Peter's High school in Keokuk.

Survivors include three daughters,Dawn Reid of Warsaw Ill, Susan Tweedy of rural Montrose, and Shelly Reid, who lives at home, two brothers, Larry of Gladstone Ill and Bobby of Rural Montrose, three sisters, Verna Simmons of Victor, Iowa, Jan Schevers, of Argyle and Judy Dietsch of Fort Madison, one grand daughter, Emily Tweedy, one grandson Eric Reid, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by one infant son and one sister

Arthur Clarence Skog -- May 3, 1890-Mar. 19, 1945

Arthur Clarence Skog, 55 a life-long resident of Keokuk and this community, died at six o’clock Monday evening at his home on the Main street road near the Ambrosia Lane. Mr. Skog, a friendly, considerate man, had suffered a paralytic stroke nearly four years ago and had borne his long suffering and illness with admirable patience and fortitude.
A son of John and Augusta Moander Skog, he was born in Keokuk on May 3, 1890, and after reaching adulthood he became a registered pharmacist, working for a number of years at both the Kiedaisch and Engelhardt drug stores here. Later he became a salesman.
Mr. Skog was married at Quincy, Illinois on March 22, 1911, to Pansy Young who survives along with one son, John M. Skog; two grandchildren, and his stepmother, Mrs. Amanda Skog of Montrose. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister who died in infancy.
Mr. Skog was baptized in the Methodist faith and was a member of Eagle Lodge No. 12, A. F. and A. M.
The Schmidt Memorial home was in charge of arrangement with burial in the Montrose cemetery.
